with the coming of the new 505 gibs from cz it seems easy to rechamber this gun into a 585 nyati or what do you think about this. the 585 is allways a little bit bigger than the 505 and bertram make the the 585 with a 505 base so bolt fits. with a reboring of the 505 barrel and some magazin modifications it will works. any comments about this idea?

PWM, the nyati is quite a bit more than this... it's a gibbs head but the case is rebated... I mean, it's fatter than 3 of my first cousins!!! personally, i don't think that it would be the "perfect" action for one, especially if you wanted it to feed. In fact, RGB has discovered and fixed several problems with that case's design. Rob's 600 OK/RGB, however, does feed VERY well in the cz550, as Well as Neal's 550 magnum... fits and feeds.... jeffe

PWN- First, I seriously doubt there is enough meat on the CZ 505 barrel to rebore to .585. Second I don't have a clue who even has the equipment for a .585 rebore. Deep hole drills in that size are extremely expensive and rare. A new barrel in .585 from Pac-Nor is the better alternative. Third, IMHO( and I own one), the .585 NYATI is a very poorly designed cartridge. The shoulder is only .030 and even with decent brass from Horneber, loaded rounds in the magazine will push the shoulder back on recoil(I built my mag with .020 clearance specifically because I was concerned about moving the shoulder back under recoil). This neat feature will make feeding a second round impossible. The only way I can think to fix this is to try and find a extremely HIGHLY COMPRESSED load that is still shootable! Ouch! This gun generates a ton of recoil and when that bullet nose hits the front of the mag well, the weakest link, the shoulder sets back! Fourth, the common .585 Nyati reamer makes a chamber neck about .003 too small, so unless you buy a separate neck reamer or neck turn your Nyati brass till it's paper thin (.007-.009) you will never even chamber a round. The .600 OK was created specifically to fix all of the above problems with the .585 Nyati as well as to significantly out perform it. Since you need a new barrel anyway, I suggest you go the .600 OK route. the CZ505 Gibbs action will be perfect for that purpose.-Rob

Very good info, Rob, and possibly related to why Ross Seyfried called his own creation, the .585 Nyati, a "nightmare." I got as far as buying some Bertram brass back when I was more naive than I am now. To anyone considering the .585 Nyati, don't even think of using the Bertram stuff, but if you are foolish enough, I will sell you mine, which I keep around as a curio from Oz, kangaroo headstamp, eh? BTW, whatever happen between Ross and Wolfe Publications? He was about the only thing that made those rags interesting.

Ron, Didn't i buy my nyato brass FROM you? Rob helped me to think that one through, a couple years ago, on building/not building the 585 jeffe

This 600 OK excites me as well ,though I dont know a huge amount about it. When the CZ505s come out I have promised to buy one. If 505 Gibbs become to passe ,then I have been thinking about getting it built up as a 600OK if it can be done at a reasonable price. Does anyone have any good pics of the 600OK loaded case next to some other big cases for comparison.?

Jeffe, Must have been someone else. I still have 4 boxes of the crap. After experiencing the torque of the T.rex, I decided that the 500 A2 is all I want to deal with in a 10.75# portable gun that puts out 200 lbs-ft/sec bullet momentum and a tidy 7600 ft-lbs of bullet energy from a 23" barrel.

thank you gentlemen, thinking its the question if the barrel is thick enough for a reboring, the reboring itself can be done. and with feeding problems this cartridge will have it is like any other feeding problem: the gunmaker havn't done his work well enough. I agre with you thats sometimes better to take a cartridge of a better construction to avoid this problem

Anyone know about how much it would cost to have a gunsmith make the cz action take a 585 Nyati or 600 OK? Thanks, Kenneth

quote: The CZ550 action is NOT the optimal action for building either the 585 Nyati or the 600 OK. It will work better for the 600 OK because the 600 OK cartridge was designed specifically for the cz550 action. But for either cartridge you will be better off with a Granite Mountain Arms action. The answer to your question for a .600 OK is a bit over $3000 if you get your 600 OK from American Hunting Rifles. www.hunting-rifles.com
