465H&HDownloaded 416 Rem
I've read that Remington has down loaded their factory 416 Rem ammo to just over 2200. Any one chrono any lately?

PathfinderYes it would wouldn't it. While that's still plenty of gun I wonder if indeed it's true. If I bought 416 ammo I'd go test some but I like my own loads just fine.

AtkinsonJeffe,
Guess it would depend on whose 416 or 404 you were shooting, certainly not mine...

Just curious. I'm not sure if your comment means you load your Taylor and 404 above or below 2200.
I will say I have no problem loading my Taylor to 2250 with pretty mild loads (compared to the max loads listed). I have never had a 416 Rem to play with, but with everything which has been written about it, I have a hard time justifying it over the Taylor.
I recently bought a Rigby, and in guns of essentially the same weight, I am amazed at the increased recoil of the Rigby at 2400 vs the Taylor at 2250. Even when loaded down to 2250, the Rigby kicks considerably harder, I suspect due to the roughly 30% increased powder charge required to give the same velocity with the larger case. That is something often overlooked in the low pressure argument. There is an increase in recoil to pay for the lower pressure. The recoil contribution of the powder charge is much higher than the ratio of powder to bullet weight, due to the much higher exit velocity of the propellent gas.
