I just picked up a marlin 1895m in 450 marlin, and was hoping to put peep sights on it. I was wondering what kind you guys prefer, and where's a good place to get them online. Also if you could give me some idea on what it takes to install them. Thanks, JT

On my own 1895GG I installed the Wild West Guns Ghostring sight. It's built like a tank and accepts screw in apertures for precise sighting. It basically is a set of sliding dovetails that use set screws to lock windage and elevation settings. A friend recently bought a Stainless GG and we installed the XO / Ashley Ghostring. It seems a bit more user friendly by using screws to adjust windage and elevation. The aperture is a ring sitting atop the sight and it might break if you really abused it. Either one is good for rapid shooting and allows more precise placement than you'd surmise at first glance. The XO is somewhat cheaper than the WWG sight but either one works well. They both came from Brownell's so I cant comment on where the best online vendor is. Both install in the existing holes and it didnt' take more than a half hour to be up and running for either gun. hth Rick [ 10-08-2003, 06:48: Message edited by: Rick R ]

I prefer the old Lyman 66 or the Redfield 102 receiver sights. Find them on eBay.

Hi JT, I'll put a vote in for the Ashley Peep system. I have it on my 45-70 and a couple of big bores. There are two apature sizes available. There is a link from my site to Express Sights. I put some flourescent red paint on my front sight and it really helps. When hunting I take off the front hood because it almost mirrors the peep ring and can cause confusion which means a delay. Take care, Dave

The ashley or XS as they are now called gets my vote. Got one on my 1895 CB for pig hunting. You can also order a threaded aperture that accepts williams and other apertures if you feel the need for some target work. I just ordered one for one of my mausers. -M

I've had a Williams 5D on mine since 1975. I use the factory front sight. I can use the small aperture for fine work and unscrew the aperture fitting for a "ghost ring" effect. Works just fine.
