I just bought a Sako AV .375 H&H. It is blued with a synthetic stock. The stock is the original Sako stock. Is this the Mcmillan stocked rifle?? The rifle is close to 100% - no bluing wear, no signs optics were mounted. I bought it used, so I am sure it was just taken care of. My questions are these: 1) Is it a McMillan stock?? 2) What rings / bases would you use - Optilocks?? 3) Anything that should be done to it?? - I have read the guide rail that floats on the bolt should be "pinned" instead of its standard attachment. Is that true?? I love the weight and feel of the rifle - very light - very slick. The only "plastic" I saw was the magazine follower - is that correct?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, SC

If it is the Fiberclass model, then yes, it would be a McMillan stock. I use the old Redfield-style dovetail mounts; they tighten under recoil. I don't know about pinning anything on the bolt; leave it as is. There isn't much room for improvement on the AV. George

You should take a look at the Leupold ringmounts for Sako dovetails. They are attractive (much more so than the old-style Sako rings), they clamp directly to the receiver without the need for separate bases (like the Optilocks), they appear to be like the Redfields mentioned as far as tightening under recoil, they're cheaper than Sako mounts, and best of all they allow mounting the scope further forward, for more eye relief, than the others mentioned...especially nice on a rifle with any noticeable recoil. In case it isn't apparent, I like'em! John
