i have looked at both of these big bores for a while now wich one would you choose and why

500 jeffery or 505gibbs because of the larger size of the gibbs could you not reload a similar weight bullet to higher velositys and keep pressure down? just woundering.

If the rifle was to be just a big banger then the 500 Jeffery.

If the rifle was to be the real top end gun then the 505 Gibbs.

I see the 500 Jeffery as a 338 Win necked up to 375 and the 505 Gibbs like the 375 H&H. By that I mean the 338 necked up to 375 will fit more rifles than the H&H but it lacks the class of the H&H round.

They will both flatten anything this side of the Cretaceous but the Jeffrey will also beat you up more, as well. Neither is a caliber to be taken lightly!

I think you would like the Jeffery better. The Gibbs is a bear to get to feed well since most actions are just too short. Both are fun though so in reality is really doesn't matter which you chose.

Having a 500 Jeffrey project in the safe, I'd say neither! The brass issue on both cartridges is a bummer, and easily solved by going with a 500 A-sq, or whichever version of the necked up 460 W you prefer. The larger cases simply aren't worth the added exspense and more importantly inconsistant supply.

I can only see difficult to obtain brass being worthwile on someing like the 585 Nyati or 600 Overkill.

A 500 A-Square is more economical and good quality brass is available.

If you need a 505 gibbs, this is the one to get:

Your right Paul and as long as going to 460 case
derivatives go to the 550 MAG.Simple and straight.
9000 ft lbs if wanted, over 8000 at moderate
loads..Brass by the bushel, dies for reasonable price
at C&H, Bridger can make bullets by the bushel, etc.Ed.

Well, if it's readily available brass we're concerned with, then a better choice for a premium BIG KILLER would be a .470 Mbogo. I dislike the Wby cases because that d****d belt cuts into you magazine capacity. When things get hairy, having more than two or three down just feels so good. Otherwise, you might give a thought to the .500 AHR. The feed problems with the 505 can be dealt with by getting a giant CZ action though there is a body of thought that insists that the bolt is too small and should be replaced with a custom version that contains the cartridge rim better.

The classier the rifle gets the more the 505 Gibbs moves to the front of the line.
