I was wanting some loads from some of you guys who load your 500J with the 570 grain Woodie, Barnes TSX, or the new Swift a-frame bullets (canilure is for 500N.E.). I have a magnum length action so I can get away with a longer COL if need be. I want to use R-15 to get 2150-2175fps with a 21.5 inch barrel.

The A2 manual shows the following:

RL 15 101.0 gr 2223 fps 36,700 CUP
RL 15 105.0 gr 2291 fps 39,800 CUP

This is with a 26" bbl and using 570 gr A2 Monlithic Solids.

I don't know whether you followed my other thread about .500 A2 loads, but my A2 rifle tracked very closely (identically) with the A2 manual, while another custom rifle owned by mrlexma ran significantly faster, and needed 8-10 gr less powder to achieve the same velocities.

Hi the Barnes Reloading Manual #4 has load data that I've been using for my 500 Jeffrey.

For the 570g TSX with an OAL of 3.505" in a 26" barrel, it lists:

Minimum RL 15 97g 2119 fps

Maximum RL 15 105g 2286 fps

That's using the normal lower pressure Jeffrey specs as maximum.

In my CZ 550 500 Jeffrey, shooting the 570g TSX loading it to an OAL of 3.7" in a 25" barrel,

My current load is:

H4895 95g 2100 fps

I did try the RL-15 data with the 570g TSX and got 2330 fps with 105g of RL-15. Recoil was not pleasant ... but shootable off hand. I think a lead sled is a must for bench shooting at those velocities.

Chuck

I have a 500AHR which is the same thing essentially as a 500J. I used 103gr of Rl-15 for 2250fps with woodleigh solids and some of my own turned 570 gr solids.-Rob

Dirk:

Check out this link on Real Guns. There is a bunch of data but it is pretty hot;

For what it is worth, I know a lot of guys shoot 570 and 600 grain bullets in their Jefferys. I just never saw the need to shoot anything heavier than the 535 grain bullets. If you want max penetration, pick up some Barnes 535 grain banded solids. I think they will shoot through about anything.

Hi Dave, I wish Swift would make a .510 A-Frame in 535g or Barnes would make a TSX in 535g, then I would switch. So now I'm loading the 570g TSX's and Banded Solids to about 2100 fps. I'll probably work my way up to 2300 fps over time.

Good news Chuck, Swift is, not going, to make 535 grain Swift bullets for the 500J. They will be available around Feb/10

Great news! Going back to the range Sunday, moving up from my wussy loads now that I have a lead sled lol ... I've been shooting the 570g TSX's at 2100 fps. I want to see what a 570g TSX at 2300 fps feels like off hand again ...

Thanks Dirk

Will do, I've been shooting pretty mild loads: 570g TSX, 95g H4895 for just over 2100 fps. I've got some cartridges loaded up with 97g, 101g and 105g H4895. Just have to find a nice day to hit the range and do some chronographing. Definitely using the lead sled for load development. Once I settle in on a new accurate full power load for my 500 Jeffrey, I'll be primarily shooting offhand, kneeling, sitting. and of course blowing stuff up until the next hunting season.

Smiler
