Bolt for model 70 Gibbs .505
Bolt for model 70 Gibbs .505
Leaving shortly for Africa and my bolt for the above has a jammed firing pin and will require some work to extract and fix. Anybody know where I could get a replacement bolt and would that work? Gunsmith could work on it

For a Winchester??? That would be a rare bird indeed.

GeorgeSLR3,
Isn't your .505 a CZ, not a Model 70?
George
Good question and George thanks for your interest. I thought it was a frank wells custom CZ but the adverts said when I bought it that it was a model 70 rifle. I ve tried to find Frank in AZ but have failed. Would you know what type of receiver he used? Getting nervous since I m leaving for BVC soon.

FAST996Maybe someone can identify this action.
http://www.rockislandauction.c...witem/aid/58/lid/438This rifle says it's a Winchester. I think your best bet is to find a good gunsmith to look at it. That rifle action had to have a ton of specialised work done to it. Good luck.

jeffeossowells custom action .. like a super mauser or model 70 .. not unlike the bbk or 602 or 550 in size
a gibbs case on a model 70 bolt would result in about .025 thick "walls" to hold the case to the face

Those both look like CZ actions if you ask me - I think I see dual square bridges. I am assuming the markings were ground off, but easy way to check if it's a m70 or not, the m70 sets the recoil lug before the front action screw. The CZ has the front action screw go directly into the recoil lug like on a Mauser 98. Pull the stock from the action and see what it looks like.
Take some close up pictures of just the action and post them here. I am sure someone could identify it.

ab_bentleyUnfortunately you won't find Frank, he passed on not that long ago. He made several actions from scratch, something to think about if you can't figure out if it's unclear on the model.

The rifle looks alot like a Bauska, which was a Korean copy of the CZ. I too have a 505 on the same action.
Want to buy an entire rifle for the price of a bolt ?

I think I'd find someone to fix that bolt issue pretty damn quick

jeffeossoSigh. It is a wells custom. The Bauska is NOT a Korean copy of jack. The Bauska was made in the us until it become Olympic which then changed and moved to Korea.
You might see a suggestion of dual bridges but they look nothing like a CZ. The second gun looks like a weaver base on the back. No dovetail not slotted. The CZ action is distinctive on the bridges.
Again. Wells custom

Thanks for posting that info.
His post confused me as it didn't gell.
Previously 500N with many thousands of posts !
I never knew the BBK-02 action by Olympic Arms (importers) was ever made in the USA.
Bauska Brill Korean.
Was there a Bauska "-01" action that was USA made?

I've need seen a CZ cut for weaver bases.. with a quarter rib ... the slot over the add on bases isn't a 13mm dovetail

NorsemanFrank's wife is still alive I think, I spoke to her about 2 summer's ago maybe and she was still doing custom engraving. I could very well be wrong, but I "think" he has a male relative running the shop. If I were you, I would contact Roger Green as he will be the most helpful.
Thanks everybody for the input. My gunsmith is rebuilding the bolt with new parts. There may be mixed views on the Wells customs but it shoots very accurately (1" 100 yds, 3" 300 off sticks), is nicely balanced and thanks to Mac's advice and some work I have 3 in the magazine and one in the chamber and feeds great. With the bolt repaired it should be in top form but would not soon rule out an Echols .458 or new Double .500/.577.

BaxterBDidn't Dan Pederson (?) work with Frank? And if so maybe has an insight.

I have owned a number of Bauska actions and every one said it was made in Korea and looked suspeciously similar to the CZ 550 action.
All I said was that the one by Frank Wells looked a lot like a Bauska action.
I have seen a number of Frank Wells rifles with all sorts of different actions, including one with an early, stepped-ring commercial Mauser that came off a 350 Rigby.
I certainly don't claim to be an expert on Bauska actions and am certainly willing to listen to one.
So please do tell me where the US made actions came from and who made them?

gracias.
Yes, we're confusing Frank Wells with Fred Wells. Fred was the pioneer behind the resurrection of the modern Magnum Mauser action. Actions from Empire and Mike Roden at Granite Mountain started in Fred's shop. His wife Rachael still engraves, I believe, and Fred's sons have now carried on his business. They are introducing their new model of the Mauser action shortly, if they haven't already.
