Hello all. I am really liking the old Mauser 71/84 rifle. It was original in .43 Mauser. That was a black powder caliber, but I guess it is ok to load it smokeless? Some who have and use these caliber? Hunt with it? What bullets and what FPS do you get? Cheers all Vegard_dino

I helped a friend in Namibia get ammo for his 11.15x58(?) cape-gun. He had said that no one could find the ammo. I took that as a challenge and, after some research, found that 11.15x58 was the metric designation for the 43 Mauser. Old Western Scrounger had 43 Mauser ammo loaded with Pyrodex. IIRC it was a 340 grain lead bullet at +-1300fps. He was so pleased when I brought the ammo that he let me use the rifle to take a broken horned kudu. That 340 grain bullet punched right through the kudu and produced a clean kill even though mu shot was not perfect. So, sorry for writing a book and not really answering your question... My point, the 43 Mauser is cool and is one heck of a killer. If I were to handload for it I would look to Trailboss powder. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure. -Jason Brown
