Sounds like you kept the wrong one

Use a BRNO 602 (magnum) action or CZ 550 magnum action, just like AHR does.

If you want to use a Mauser action and can not afford/pick up a magnum length then, according to my Gunsmith, the VZ24 is one of the best to use. The P14/M17 Enfield's are a good choice.

true, but some do not care for the CZ trigger...

Easy fix, put in the AHR single stage trigger. It's wonderful.

One of the beauties of the 404 is that it can be built on a standard length Mauser, like the originals. No need for heavy, cumbersome magnum length actions.

I understand the cumbersome part, but whats the actual difference in weight between the two actions?

A magnum action is always my choice, I don't want a fwt 404 J, I like a 9.5 to 10 lb. rifle and properly built it not bulky or clumsy..I consider a 404 on a 98 action a blivit, that's 10 lbs of poop in a 5 lb. bag...I believe the mag mauser makes a better 404 or 416, they feed better and smoother and you have room to seat bullet out. I know it can be done, and if that's ones choice then have at it, but my head is made up!
