This is a great time to take up handloading. That way you can start with lighter loads. Get a 375. It is the largest cartridge that almost everyone can master easily. Beyond that some people start saying uncle. It is also the least legal DGR in most african countries. Every gun safe needs at least one 375 if not a bunch. Shoot it a bunch. Good hunting. Although cartridge selection is important there is nothing that will substitute for proper first shot placement. Good hunting, "D"

Yes, I plan to set up to reload sometime soon. It's unfortunate, but at this time I live in an apartment, so there no space to do so. Twenty or so years ago my brother broke his ankle on the job.... The reason this is significant is that aside from other compensation he also recieved a cash payment. He decided that he needed to buy one completely rediculous thing. His choice? a Weatherby in 460. Only I have ever fired it "from the bench", and while recoil was "bad" I've gotten worse from a lightweight 12ga shotgun firing 3"Mag slug loads. My Mossberg 500 forinstance weighs BARELY 7lbs. The weatherby is considerably heavier the weatherby is throwing a slug about the same weight (500grain Vs 492 grains for a 1-1/8oz slug) about 1000fps faster (2600fps Vs 1600fps for the 12ga) And so one would expect about 50% more recoil That was NOT the case, the Weatherby weighs just shy of 12lbs. Choosing between a 12lb 460Wby and a 7lb 12ga with no recoil pad, I'd choose the 460. Don't worry overmuch about the recoil, you won't be shooting from a shooting bench much. You'll probably do most of your shooting standing up. AllanD If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day! Those who manage to provoke themselves into other activities have only themselves to blame. *We Band of 45-70er's* 35 year Life Member of the NRA NRA Life Member since 1984
