I just receiveeda new Ruger Safari mag in 416 Rigby. It was worked on by my gunsmith before i took possession. It shhoots and feeds beautufully. Now for the scary part. The trigger locks after the first shot. The second shot cannot be made. If I work the bolt and chamber a new cartridge it works again. seems like the trigger is not resetting.. Anyone have a similar problem. This scared the hell out of me!!!!

Perhaps I am missing something.

What second shot? This is a bolt-action, and you have to work the bolt to chamber a new round and cock the trigger mechanism.

It must be something with Ruger 416's, my No. 1 will only shoot once without inserting another round.

nO, i HAVE NOT RESOPLVED THE PROBLEM!! i AM TAKINGH IT TO MY SMITH IN CT TOMORROW. HE IS SUGGESTING THAT A WHOLE NEW FACTORY TRIGGER ASSY SHOULD BE INSTALLED. THIS IS NOT THE RIFLE THAT I WANT TO HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT ON MY NEXT BUFF HUNT. tHIS IS SERIOUS AND A POTENTIAL INJURY PRODUCING PROBLEM. I WILL LET YOU KNOW IF THE NEW TRIGGER ASSY CURES THIS. iT HAPPENS ON THE SECOND CHAMBERING ABOUT 75 % OF THE TIME.

aFTER FIRING THE FIRST ROUND AND EJECTING IT AND CHAMBERING THE 2ND ROUND THE TRIGGER WILL NOT FIRE. IT HAPPENS ABOUT 75% OF THE TIME. IF I THEN EJECT THE ROUND THAT WOULD NOT FIRE, AND CHAMBER A NEW ROUND (#3) IT WILL FIRE. THE TRIGGER DOES NOT RESET

tTHE SECOND SHOT IS THE 2ND ROUND CHAMBERED AFTER EJECTING THE FIRST FIRED ROUND. YES THE TRIGGER SHOULD GET COCKED ON CHAMBERING THE NEXT ROUND. IT DOESN'T

Okay, I'm getting a better picture now. You can fire one round, cycle the bolt putting a fresh round into the chamber and then it "will not fire" on the second round. That indeed is a problem!

My RSM Rigby and Lott have had feeding issues but never the type of failure to fire you are getting. Hopefully your smith or Ruger can sort it out...as you know what you have now is something that is not acceptable.

Makes perfect sense now, I sorta thought that was what you meant. Sorry I can't begin to imagine how it would do this let alone suggest a solution, the visit to the smith seems to be the best plan to me.

Hi Tony,
Is it worth bringing it to the same gunsmith who had it prior to the problem and may have actually caused it? I'd suggest a different gunsmith and if you don't know of one, ask on that forum or I can ask my dealer in RI who he would recommend.
Why was it worked on prior to you taking possession?

That's a problem (perhaps the sear is releasing while closing the bolt), and it was caused by your gunsmith's 'loving attention' to your rifle's trigger. He should fix it free of charge.

George
P.S. Your 'caps lock' is on.

Could be that he has the caps lock key pushed down too hard and it affects the trigger... clap

I have a MK 2 Ruger, not an rsm, but I asume the factory trigger is the same.
I instaled a timny in it and it works great.
You might try that.

The trigger return spring is either broken or out of position. Do yourself a favor and get a aftermarket trigger from brownells and either install it yourself or have a gunsmith do it for you. -Rob

+2 for Timney. It took me about 30 minutes to install on my CZ550, as this was the first I ever installed. Easy to adjust and couldn't be any happier.

Ribgunbuilder is giving you good info. The gunsmith lightened the trigger pull by clipping the return spring instead of changing the sear angle, so the pin is dropping when you close the bolt. The first recommendation is to find a new gunsmith, the second is to replace the trigger return spring with a stock one. I can fix this trigger and I am a very amateur gunsmith, but at least have a heavy dose of mechanical aptitude.
