Thought I would share some recovered bullet data from our eland hunt at Camp Cooley Ranch this past weekend. I was using a 400 grain .408 caliber Weldcore at the tropical loading for my rifle 1,950 FPS. The original lenght was 1.15 inches. Recovered length was .873. The recovered bullet weighed 384.4 grains. By my calculations that is 96.1% of it's original weight. It had mushroomed to .873 caliber. The shot was from straight on at 100-110 yards, through the lower chest. The bullet was recovered in the chest. The base diameter of the bullet was still .408 Below is the recovered .458 bullet from NE450#2's namesake rifle. I'll let him give you the particulars on his bullet. My 450/400 3 inch .408 on left, 450#2 NE's .458 on the right.

I fired the 480gr .458 Woodleigh from my 450 No2. The distance was @ 110 yards. the Eland was struck on the left side. The bullet knocked a hole in the spine and was trapped in the skin on the far side. The Eland went right down. The unfired length of the bullet is 1.262, the recovered length is .754. Max expansion is .835, ninimum expansion is .680. The recovered byllet weighs 368.9 gr. , which is about 76.8% weight retention. I just finished my second meal of Eland, floured and fried in Olive Oil. Very good, no gamey or wild taste.

Looks about like any other woodleigh I have ever seen recovered from an animal...I have a pile of them in my window sill, all look just like that one. There is no better bullet, some, like the Nosler, will penitrate more, but so what....
