Would you trust the factory flip up sight as a backup or replace it with a NECG rear sight?

I have 2 Win Model 70's in .375 H&H.
One is a Stainless Classic with the flip up sight, the other a SuperGrade with a very nice standing rear sight (factory).
I will eventually change the flip up to the same sight as my SuperGrade.
My thoughts are that if you are in the tight brush you don't need to keep checking that your sight hasn't folded down, you will have other more important things on your mind.
I just need to figure out what Winchester part number sight my SuperGrade came with and order it to install on my Stainless classic.

I have a couple of lighter rifles with flip up sights and I would not put them on a DG gun mainly because I have gone to fire my rifles and could not ascertain at the time of shooting that the sight was up, surely wouldn't want my life or some else's depend on whether the site is positioned correctly. Now having said this, it may as a back up site maybe acceptable

Has anyone looked at the ghost ring like set up that NECG has that will fit their standard rear sight base?

I have one of the Talley ghost rings but have never used it. Never used the back-up scope either but it gives me warm fuzzys to have them both along.

I'm wondering how the aperture would work with that short sight radius.

I have one of the Talley aperture sights that goes on the rear sight base, if that is what you are talking about. I have not used it hunting. It is a backup to the scope and I have never needed it. However, I did sight it in and I have shot paper with it to confirm zero. It works very well and if I ever have to remove the sight and use the aperture I know it will shoot where I aim.

I would keep the fold-down rear sight AND get a backup rear peep sight.
You cannot use a rear peep sight unless the open rear sight is fold-down or the fixed rear leaf is removed.
Primary is scope, secondary is rear peep, so the open rear sight is backup to backup ... unless you want to go whole hog and do an open-sight-only DGR with proper gunstock configuration to match the proper fixed, standing rear sight.
Or use a ghost ring rear peep built like a tank and get rid of the open rear sight altogether, and no scope. Real battle sights!
No gunstock fit compromise for the primary sighting system please.

What short sight radius are you referring to? If you mount a ghost ring sight on a rear scope base, then you have effectively doubled the sight radius over an open rear sight. Or were you being facetious?

The NECG I was talking about has the ghost ring mounted where the regular rear sight is located .

The 1903 Springfield used such a misplaced aperture rear sight from its inception until the early 1940's, when good sense, in the form of the 1903A3 rear sight finally prevailed.

I prefer a shallow V one standing or with two down if it clears the scope bases...However the best Ive found for myself is the neat little Talley QD peep that slides on the Talley scope bases, combined with a gold faced NECG partridge front sight..

As to the flip ups, its rumored that they will be down when you need them, but I doubt that is anything more than a ho hum possibility unless one has a problem chewing gum and walking at the same time...I see them as a good enough option..I use irons a lot so I don't use the flip up, but 95% of the hunters never use their optional irons, and the other 5% probably never have sighted them in, or so it seems to me over the years...Im sure some actually do sight in the irons, and some profess they do, the majority do not however..
