Paz500gr lead projectiles and the 458AR ??
Have picked up some 500gr lead projectiles that i want to run through my 458AR, only problem is i am not sure what to run through it as far as powder goes.
My goal speed is somewhere between 1000 and 2000 fps (so i can run them at my local pistol club range for some fun).
On hand i have AR2205, AR2206, AR2206H, AR2209, BM2, Hercules Unique, AP50N and Trail Boss.
I can fit about 32gns of the Trail Boss in the case and i have found a load for the 45-120 with a max load of 29gns for 1105fps and 24,300 CUP, sound any good?
Normally i have been running 86gns AR2206H behind a 405gn projie to get around 2600fps or a little more(only guessed, never chrony'd).
Maybe if someone has some load software they can run some scenarios for me if possible?

mstarlingHave used 435 cast bullets with AA5744. Cast in WW, sized to .459" and used Carnauba Red lube. Hold about an inch groups at 100. Work well.
Have a Lee mold and we've used the bullet in the Lott but not in the AR yet.

Jeff, wouldn't/isn't there a difference in the lead pill compared to the jacketed pill as far as a loading stand point, ie is the lead pill easier to push out of the barrel then the jacketed pill therefore the load would have to be different?
Sorry for the dumb questions, never played with lead pills in a rifle before, even harder since the AR doesn't have a lot of load data around.
MS, from what i can find the AA5744 is a little slower then our ADI AR2205, how many grains of powder?

mstarlingPaz,
AA5744 has the unique property that it can be loaded to small charge volumes in comparison to case volumes. You need to check to see if that is true of ADI AR2205.
I use 50.0 gr of AA5744 behind the 435 gr cast gas checked bullet.
Cast bullets are easier to push through a bore.

PazWell 2205 can't do that I'm sure, so scrap that idea. Not able to find anything available here either that would be equivalent to the AA5744, damn.
So if the lead is easier to push, does that mean it would not build as much pressure as the exact same load for a jacketed bullet, meaning the lead load would be well within safe pressures easily (i don't wanna blow up, lmao)?

jeffeossoi aint an expert in lead bullets.. they tend to run slower than jacketed bullets, for the same load, all else being equal

Rick RFWIW, I'm using the 500gr Lee gas checked bullet (Mike casts them for me) with five grains less Varget than my max loads in my .458 Lott.
I haven't chrono'd them, just loaded up till they were hitting to the same point of impact as the 500gr Hornady bullets in my "for real" loads. No leading, they're actually easier to clean up after than the jacketed bullet loads.
It's not a light load, 30# steel plates hit at 50 yards give off a Clang! that reverberates as the the plate just dissapears. Recoil is substantial too.

Jeffe can probably interpret the difference in Lott and AR data.

PazRick that's gold thanks, i am running full house plus a bit 458lott loads through my AR now so it gives me a really good idea.

jeffeossoI just use lott middle loads and work up.
cast data for the lott ought to work, but that's not reloading advice, that's just internet chatter!
Mike has done more work with casts than me.
I like rem 405s, though i realize they won't be cheap in oz

PazWell ran through some loads today, used both reduced AR2206H loads and Trail Boss loads.
The 2206H did not produce enough pressure to seal the case and i got sooted necks and dented shoulders, they did however shoot rather accurately and had a nice boot to them. No leading evident so i will up the grains a little and see if i can build some pressure without leading (they are not checked).
The trail boss loads were great, shot about 10" higher then normal jacketed full house loads though. I will play some more and see how hard i can push them, recoil is like a .22, sort of

.
Thanks for your help guys.

jeffeossoslower loads always hit higher.. but you can't convince most people without them being at the range, and shooting over a chrono!!
heck, if they are shooting well, don't mess with it!
