Not being a big bore shooter, I enjoy learning about the 375 H&H posts. Just curious, and apologize up front if this is a "big bore 101" question I should know, but... What would you call a 2.5" long belted case (ie 338 Win mag) necked up to .375 (or a 458 necked down to .375 with 25 degree shoulder)? Is it a 375/338 mag? Is there an equivalent on a non-belted case (presuming a 404 Jeffery case)? If so, what would the MV be for a 270 grain bullet? Is it the equivalent of a 375 H&H, but just in a smaller package? I think I remember the 416 Taylor is similar (obviously with a larger diameter bullet), but has ~ 40 degree shoulder, not 25 degree shoulder. Is there a "416-338 mag" with the "normal 25 degree shoulder?" And following, is there a non-belted "416-338" with ~25 degree shoulder. Not sure if this belongs in "Wildcat forum" but I figure the guys who shoot the 375 H&H would know. I am getting intrigued with the performance with the 375 H&H. Good trajectory, strong energy, and sounds like managable recoil. Haven't shot one, but I think about digging one up one day. I'll never go to Africa or Alaska, but I may get a Moose in Maine someday. That's the biggest thing I'll chase (and you don't need a 375 H&H for that). Guess I'm just looking for a classic shooting toy to take for a ride on the bench. Thanks in advance.

375 Chatfield/Taylor is the 375-338. I believe the Taylor angle is 30 compared to the 25 for the 338. Since the headspace is on the belt the angle will form itself the first firing. I don't know of a 25 deg version. I don't see 5 deg as an issue. If you held them side by side it would be hard to see the difference. Since the 375 H&H is normally loaded to a lower pressure the 375 Chatfield can reach its velocities at a higher pressure. If you load both to the same pressure the H&H should give just a touch more velocity. With a 270 and 24" 2700-2800FPS for a max. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

The equivalent cartridge without a belt would be the .376 Steyr, which is a factory round. The case is a shortened and opened up 9.3X64. There are several .375s on the .404 Jeff case. The Dakota version is a proprietary, the others are wildcats. Saeed's .375-.404 being the most famous, at least on AR! jim if you're too busy to hunt, you're too busy.

The 375/338 is a wonderful round. I had a model 700 made up in one back in the 70's with a Paul Marquart barrel. But like anything else after a while I just got tired of playing with wildcats. It would do anything the H&H would. Shoot my first grizz with it. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.
