Was just reading some of the old posts about this idea and got to thinking about actions, etc.
How about the Mossberg SSI shotgun? It would be a single shot, but I think the action is quite
strong, and a fairly large action as well. It reminded me of a smaller version of Seyfried's single
shot 4 bore.
What do others think? Could be a economical alternative and you could always antique it with
some case colors and a fancy stock and still come out with a good deal.

300H&H--They are nice looking single shot, and a
great deal for the money. They are not any stronger than H&R or other break open guns; so you would have to stay at regular shot gun pressures.IE, 12-14,000 psi.Ed.

hubel458,
Thanks for the reply. I'm surprised they couldn't handle anymore than that, they look much stronger. When I first saw one it was in a rifle caliber-30'06 I think, and it handles the high pressures. Is there a difference between the two actions as far as size/strength go? Or is the barrel an issue as well? The lug on the barrel sure looks strong, but I guess the locking mechanism is weak.
Thanks,
300H&H.

300H&H--The total thrust against the standing
breech is the factor, and a 12 ga at about 4 times the base size and a quarter of the 30-06
pressure, gives same thrust. Now the 12GA FH
brass is much stronger than plastic 12 ga cases
so you could go up a little.I think if you had
a barrel on one(Or an H&R, or other singles), that was heavy all the way to muzzle you could use surplus or BMG slow powder, a 900 grain 600NE bullet in a sabot and get 3/4 of 600NE speed.Or an ounce slug to about 2000 fps.But you got to have a heavy barrel all the way to muzzle,
as down the barrel pressure will be up, compared to high speed shotgun powder loads.Sizes like
.92 OD at muzzle is too thin.Sometime later
I will have to get barrel for one and check it
out.Ed.

Ed,
As if a 500A2 wasn't big enough, now you have me intrigued by this 12GFH idea. Where does it stop? I doubt anything will do short of a punt gun....For my action I submit a Stevens action. It has a surprisingly good trigger and seems damn solid. Have a look --->

I hope to find a suitable barrel out there somewhere....45nut
