I have a Rem KS in .458 Win Mag that I would like to have the chamber Lotted out, but before I do that, I would like to see how much it would cost to have the extractor changed to a Sako style. I think there used to be 'smiths who specialized in that. Gpopper

I would not invest in that design rifle as a DGR. It lacks controlled round feeding, a M70 type safety and even the bolt handle is brazed on to the bolt body along with the locking lug section brazed on. My suggestion is to sell it as it is and look at other brands.

Don't fix what ain't broke. I've seen just as many issues w/ CF's as PF's. Practice with the exact ammo your going to hunt with, and there shouldn't be any surprises.

The gunsmith I use charges $130. May not be a bad idea to do this while getting it reamed out to a Lott. BigB

Some say it is a solution to a non-existant problem but, I have all my Remington 700's done that way and like them. I even used the .280 in South Africa. The PH thought it looked good and functioned well. "I ask, sir, what is the Militia? It is the whole people. I have done literally hundreds of those conversons. First off, they need to be done CORRECTLY, too many of them are doen with a shorcut method. Next, the magnum conversion of the Sako extractor plain don't work! The width of the magnum extractor used is too wide and causes the angle of ejection to be too high and results in the empty case striking the scope turret and bounces it back into the loading port. I will not do a magnum conversion because of this. If you need the Sako extractor on a Remington bolt, get the PTG bolt, he places the ejector pin in a different place and his will work. I have used evolution USA for such work on several PH and guides rifles. Well worth it, particularly in .416 Rem but Having seen two rem 700 ectractors brak after a non fatal shot on elephant, I consider the coversion worth every penny...as do those PH/Guides whome I have organised the replacement bolts for. And if push feeds are the abomination I once belivedthen how come two of the top hands used them (win 70 push feed and Mauser 66. Heck Even I had a lott on a push feed .458 M70

Like Jim stated, you can run iussues using the Sako extractor on a magnum rim. My gunsmith does the M16 extractor when doing R700 mags, says it works out much better. About any competent gunsmith should be able to do the work for you, its a very common upgrade, most webpages from smiths even have it listed on their common price lists. If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

What kind of extractor is Remington using on their new M700 in .338 Lapua Magnum, with 5-shot vertical stack detachable clip?

The factory extractor on my Remington 700 in 375 Ackley Improved broke on my first SA plains game/cape buffalo safari last year. Luckily it was near the very end of the hunt. 500+/- total rounds through it when it happened. The gun still functioned but I had to point the barrel skyward to extract the fired case. Awkward I know, but like T.R. said, "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." I had Jarrett Rifles put a Sako style extractor on it as soon as I got back and it now feeds and ejects smoothly with Talley rings/bases and Z6 1X6 EE--no problem with ejecting empties into the loading port. I killed a brown bear on the peninsula with it this May and the 3 shots after the first hit were ejected as fast as I could get them out. I'll be using a push feed Model 70 from the Winchester Custom Shop in 458 Lott on my first elephant safari next summer. Tom

Oops...correction. What I meant to say is I'll be using a controlled round feed/claw extractor on my Model 70 in 458 Lott.

Rip, the M700 in .338 Lapua uses a Sako style extractor because according to Remington, there is not enough meat left in the bolt face for a normal 700 type. I saw a write up & pics in an Aussie mag on this & it appeared to be longer than the Sako one. The other thing they had done was to reposition the ejector to alter the ejection angle. I'll see if I can find the article & give some more accurate details. Steve.

For the benefit of anyone else interested in this & wihout wanting to compromise copywrite, the standard 700 rem bolt, when looking at the bolt face with the lug horizontal, ie as it would be when extracting, has the extractor at 9 o'clock & the ejector at 4 o'clock, the 700P MLR in 338 Lapua has its Sako style (but longer) extractor at 11 o'clock which is where I understand all Sako conversions go & the ejector at 3 o'clock. I guess this is to give better sideways ejection with the fat case without hitting large Mil style scopes. Steve.

The one I saw looked like the M16 extractor. That bolt face was scary thin though.. .

Having educated myself as to the difference between Sako & M16 style extractors, I'm confident to say that the extractor on the 700P MLR is an M16 type, probably very similar to the Badger one shown HERE Steve.
