Assume you are headed to Africa to hunt buff and eland - if you owned a good, solid old Model 70 (pre-64) unaltered in .375 H&H, would you hunt a lot with it? Or just have in the safe? Or, would you hold it in the safe and hunt with the new model 70? Thanks

I'd hunt with it. It's just a rifle, and a fairly common one at that. George

I'd put every mile and memory into that rifle I could before it goes to the kids (with a diary of memories). Enjoy it ... and enjoy passing it along to a loved one. NO! It's a piece of junk! Send it to me, and I'l dispose of it for you! The pre-64 Mod 70 chambered for 375 H&H, or 300H&H were made for hunting, and IMO, are about as good as it gets in a factory, OFF THE SHELF bolt rifle! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

The only rifle more useful than that one is the same thing in 30-06. Hunt it. Okie John "The 30-06 works. Period." --Finn Aagaard

How about neither. I would sell it asap, and buy a more interesting rifle. Brent When there is lead in the air, there is hope in my heart -- MWH ~1996

I guess it depends if you own the rifle to sell it someday or if you own it to hunt with it. Why wouldn't one hunt with it? Unless of course it isn't accurate, has feeding problems with the bullets you want to use, has out of alignment iron sights, the magazine door opens under recoil, the trigger hasn't been correctly adjusted......... _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

My intent is to hunt with it. I typically never sell a gun, just set it aside and get another. Thanks everyone for the advice.

Brent said sell it, and buy a more interesting rifle! I say he's right, sell it to me, if it is a pre 64 with rifleing left in it's barrel! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

I can't abide a gun I won't take out and hunt, it either get's used to hunt, or sold to buy something I will use to hunt. __________________________________________________ The AR series of rounds, ridding the world of 7mm rem mags, one gun at a time.

Scratches you get pulling arifle out of the safe are much different to those you get in the field which come with memorable moments, I call the ones obtained in the field, "honerable scars".Be bold! Hunt with the dam thing Put it this way, I would rather hunt with Selbys scratched & blueing worn 416Rigby than some shinny new one off the showroom floor, Cause it has character.
