The shotgun was a gunshow $50 Western Fields solidly built break action that, with a lead .40" bullet, slugged to .385" through the choke. I was trying a .452 bullet in a .410 barrel [and a .385" choke]. I was using 7.62x54R brass modified on the lathe to get the base diameter and thickness and rim diameter down to .410 specs. First I tried a 454 Cassul like load. I put a .452" FMJ 230 Montana Gold bullet in a 1.550" case, CCI200 primer, 37 gr H110, OAL= 1.754". Recoil was moderate, and the case a little sticky. Next I tried a 450 Marlin like load. I put a .452" FMJ 230 gr Montana Gold bullet in a 2.110" case, CCI200 primer, 45.5 gr H110, 2.900" OAL. Recoil was horrendous. The primer slightly cratered. The case was not sticky. The choke spit back .25" to the sight hole and the barrel now slugs to .395". next: .458" 405 gr. LSWC, 2.1" OAL, 45Colt brass, 40 gr H110, CCI200, compressed, top hat and catered primer, .004~.005" case head expansion. The last one was a double charge for a 454 Casull. I tried allot of other loads too, but I do not think high velocity FMJ .452" bullets are good for a .385" choke.

We used to do it a lot when I was a kid. My single barreled shotgun would shoot 41 Mags and 44 specials (didn't have a 45 so can't sat about that). The 41s would still fall out of the chamber after firing so that was probably not such a good idea. The chamber of a 410 Stevens or NEF crack-open shotgun is several times thicker than the wall of an S&W revolver from the 70s. I don't know about current pistols. My little Huglu 410 sxs, on the other hand, looks way to delicate for the task.

many .410 chambers accept 44 magnum brass, use a round ball of a diameter max.005 over choke dia. and you are on the safe side with the bullet. brennecke made .410 slugs and maybe other slugs are on the market.
