Hi I constantly hear people saying don't mess with the Lott because it recoils too much. Since you can shoot both 458 Win mag loads, and 458 Lott loads: If you shoot a 300 grain Barnes X bullet, loaded for the Lott, http://www.cpcartridge.com/458lott-P.htm at say, 2500-2700 fps, depending upon barrel length, wouldn't that recoil about like a 375 H&H(nearly same case capacity, and same bullet weight) yet have a bit more knockdown power, yet plenty of penetration(since the X is known at high velocity to turn into a 85% solid shank?). Doesn't that sort of loading give the Lott a great range, and perhaps make the 375 H&H unneccessary? Only thing is you can't scope a 458 Lott like you can a 375 H&H, unless you know of someone that makes quick release mounts for this caliber/rifle combination... s

It depends on the sectional density of 458 Barnes 300 grainer. It might go depending on how much holdover is needed. Since it is so light a bullet, it may or may not go. Since the 300 gr 458 bullet is a short fat blunt nose critter, you may be disappointed. The 375 300 gr bullet is more aerodynamically shaped for longer shots if necessary. Damn, I thought I might help but am confusing myself with this.

Appears I'm not the only one that likes the 300-325 grain bullets, in 45 or 500 caliber: http://www.barnesbullets.com/ Click on the hunting africa link at the bottom.

How does woodleigh's 480 gr bullet go ?? little less weight etc. ?? Maybe that would be the bullet of choice for the lott or win mag, at the end of the day the lott can only get 2300 fps tops with the 500 grain bullet.

I have used Woodleigh's 400 grain PP in the Lott and it worked well. It's a 300 yard cartridge without significant holdover.

Barnes make two different 300 grain X bullets, one flat nose for the 45/70 and another pointed style for the .458 and such. The better way to go IMO would be to go for the 350 X. It has a B.C. of .400, and if you pushed it to 2600-2700 would drop a projected 9" @ 300 with a 200 yd. zero. Those are 30/06 180 gr. kind of numbers. BTW, you could most likely get around 2900-3000 with that bullet from the Lott, the .458 Winny is rated at 2700. Gabe

I agree. I get 2,770 fps with the 350 "X", easily, with RL-7.

I tried the Barnes 350 grain X spire point in my Ruger # 1 chambered for 45/70. I had problems with the bullets greasing the barrel with copper after 2 or 3 shots, then accuracy went to hell. I really wanted to use the bullet because of its relatively high BC. Anyone else experiencing this kind of problem? [ 07-29-2003, 20:38: Message edited by: crowrifle ]

Anybody shot anything with the 350 X? Seems like they should work just fine on anything short of elephant... s

How fast have people clocked there lotts with the 300 gr bullets. I am thinking for thin skinned aussie stuff the sierra pro-hunter .458 300 gr which is like expands at 45/70 velocity would be behave like a nosler .22 cal 50 gr ballistic tip at top lott velocity. Could be a fun load for vermin destruction

PC, As papaschmud said, I wouldn't be surprised at near 3000 fps with the 300 grainers.
