Quote: Got any photos of those bears? I'm sure that would have made the local papers! Quote: How about a .458 Win.Mag. doing 2000 with a 500gr. bullet? Why would anyone not consider a .45 caliber bullet going near 2000fps a big bore? BB Who said it wasn't? George

I'd sure be interested in seeing pics of an 800lb black bear! Heck, that's bigger than 95% of interior grizzlies that get killed in any given year. I'm not disputing their existence, I really would like to see the pics. The biggest bears I have had exposure to would be 600 to 700 lb grizz, and maybe a couple black's that would go 400 lbs. FWIW, I will second what George said about the bullet weights. A .458 Win will push a 500gr bullet a little faster than a Marlin 45/70 will safely push a 400gr bullet. A 45/70 pushing a 400gr bullet at 2000fps is damn fine bear medicine regardless. Cheers, Canuck

Well I can surely see where posts on other forums find their foundation for calling some posters on this big bore forum idots! Tell me where I ever stated I wouldn't post some pictures of my bears....even though I am sorry to admit to it, I do still work for a living and am there as I type this. Tonight after dinner IF I feel the need to I will look through a few old albums for some pics I took of them. Then scan and post them. I surely do not feel I need to prove myself though. Secondly I've killed plenty of critters with rifles larger than 45-70 caliber myself, but the topic here that I started was about my love for the 45-70 and the effectiveness of it on Pa. Black bears, not someone else trying to inflate their own egos to say "I've killed plenty of animals with a 458 win mag... and PLLLLLEASE ask me to post them..." If an ego picture on the bottom of a post above a signature floats your boat so be it but not everyone feels so insecure! BB

Quote: Where's the fun in that? Since you have been using your camera lately I have been expecting some more pics of guns you may or may not own, and game that you may or may not have killed with those guns that may be yours, your buddies, fictional, etc, etc. Cheers, Canuck

Canuk : you made a sensible post an my earlier post wasn't intended towards you or forthat mater GeorgeS either. Christ I don't even know why I bothered to post in reply to a guy with a name that starts with ASS_ For the record my bears are listed in the PGC's record keeping book along with about 5 dz more over 500 # in the last 20 yrs or so. Of last years 3 800+ lb bears , two were taken in Pike Co in the NE corner of PA within 100 miles from GeorgeS.I don't usually read the local papers but I'm sure someone has a photo.I wondered how they got it out of the woods. It must have caused quite a bit of exitement at the game check station.I got a close up view [15 feet] of a ~400# one last year ,a very healthy one stuffing his face with acorns !!I would have no hesitaion using my 45-70 on them.

Quote: I think you need to take a deep breath or perhaps a shot of ASS_CLOWN's Jack Daniels . Who accused you of anything? Who asked you to 'prove yourself'? Who claimed to have 'killed plenty of animals with a 458 win mag'? You made a couple of declarative statements, which were countered (and not in belligerent tone, either). If you're not interested in a give-and-take, start your own forum and make it read-only. Almost everyone here is a shooter, and most of us are hunters. I know I'd like to see photos of one of our Members with a big bear, and others probably would, too. As for my 'ego picture', I am proud of that Cape buffalo and had you ever hunted Cape buffalo, you'd know why. George

Quote: mete, I wonder about that myself. I believe PGC requires you to take the entire (field-dressed) carcass in to a game check station; that would require horses/mules, an ATV and wagon, or some sort of hoist and pick-up truck that could get into the woods. BB, How does one get an animal that size out of the woods? George

In general I don't think the board at large has disparaged the 45-70 as a hunting round. Many posters have used it for a variety of game, and quite effectively. Well to be exact yes I have hunted an killed four cape buff that qualifies to me as "thick skinned" two with my 458 win mag, 1 with a 45-70 the other with a 45-110. I can't speak for the 800# bears but for the bears I killed one I was able to get my son's 4x4 pkup to within 150 yds on my farm and with the help of three friends we dragged the field dressed bear to the truck an winched it aboard. The other one @ 687# I put it in the bucket of my tractor to haul it out. thirdly once again my topic was about the 45-70 and Pa black bears *** may be worthy of note here that I've seen a boar black bear in my corn fields a few times this late summer and early fall that I judge to be larger than my biggest bear! I'd be surprized if he doesn't go over 700# right now! Last year a 13 yr old kid killed a 714 # bruin about 1/2 mile from my place that I had seen the night before eating apples in my orchard.BB

I thought you said you weren't Carmello ! If not then I never brought your name into it ! ooops. I did think that Carmello the mighty cape buff hunter with the 45-70 ....... and no Cape Buff photos was a perfect fit for this strand.
