I like two lugs when you go to 458 Lott and beyond, saves a lot of split ruined wood...and I want them both glassed. add two cross bolts to that and your in business.

The best way to install the second lug is make it an addition to a barrel band rear sight, That is with a barrel band lug underneath and the island sight above makes a neat installation..soldered and a screw under the front sight into the barrel, for good luck.

The really big bores wreck havoc on stocks, and all the good inletting in the world will not keep the recoil from pounding a gap sooner or later into the wood recoil mortise and when that gap gets there its splitsville, at least with most of todays wood...

If a second recoil lug, of sufficient robustness, is attached to the barrel approximately 5" forward the reciever ring, as many here say is a must for a big bore, is the original receiver recoil lug necessary?

It would seem to me that the barrel lug is far stronger, since there is a great deal more wood supporting it, and the retention of the receiver lug merely weakens the magazine mortise. An area many say is already far too weak.

What do you all consider the best way to attach a barrel recoil lug? Best being defined as allowing for maximum shear strength and providing a stable bedding platform to support accuracy.

Your thoughts, opinions, and comments are welcome.

Gentleman (except you 500grains) thank you for the responses. I guess I find myself questioning the logic of the receiver lug if a substantial barrel lug is also being employed. This "questioning" is particularly true of the M70 pre64 with it's front action screw cutting through what little wood is left between the magazine mortise and the receiver lug mortise.

A little background. In my experience the primary failure due to recoil, assuming one has PROPERLY relieved the tang, is a split of the stock through the magazine mortise. This is undoubtedly due to the stock flexing resulting in the magazine mortize bulging out to the sides inducing substantial tensile forces on the stock wood fore and aft of the magazine mortise (hence the addition of cross bolts). I was interested in knowing if anyone had first hand experience where they had eliminated the front receiver recoil lug mortise in an attempt to reinforce the magazine mortise. If anyone has, what lessons were learned.

PS - Dan is the reason for the post more clear to you now?

My buddy (LB404) had a relatively light custom 505 Gibbs (by Sterling Davenport) that had 2 barrel lugs in addition to the reciever lug. Don't know if it was absolutely necessary but in that rifle I thought the insurance value of the extra-extra lug was worthwhile. As far as removing the receiver lug I don't like the idea of removing any metal in that area........DJ
