I talked with the guys from H-S Precision at the Safari Club Convention in Jan about the possibility of them making a stock for the CZ550. They said they were looking into a stock for the shorter action Bruno and then would look into the CZ550. I sent them a fax and this is the reply. Thank you for your fax about the CZ550 action/stock. At this time the CZ527 is just getting into the market. CZ USA is just now talking about the possibility of looking at our stock for the CZ550 action. You may want to give them a call and put in a good word for that stock for that action. Unless they pick it up we have not had enough inquiry to off set the tooling cost to make it a new catalog item. Thanks Janet Thompson It seems with all of the mentions about CZ550 actions being bought and used here that some e-mails to CZ USA might make for some nice dangerous game rifles. Maybe even some faxes to H-S Precision themselves. 470 Mbogo

470 Mbogo & HBH, Funny that you should mention this...as I emailed CZ-USA this morning asking them if there are any changes in store for the CZ-550 Magnum wrt the stock and whether the 3-position safety that is offered by CZ-UB is available to the US market. Also Jim Wisner (Precise Metalsmithing Ent.) offers his exceptional M70 style 3-position safeties for the BRNO ZKK 600-602 actions. He also makes "Magnum" QR lever rings that fit the BRNO ZKK 600-602 actions. You can email Jim at jenjim@quik.com or (360)748-3743. Jeff Pfeifer

I posted some of the same information on 06-05-2001 by RNS "CZ-550 stock options from cz" plus a telephone number to call, good to keep it going. Your web site is very informative and saved me a lot of work on my 450 watts. I just started working up loads for the 600 gr Barnes originals and don't recall if you had any info on them, thanks good shooting

FWIW - I got a reply from cz-usa today in essence saying that they don't do special orders on what is offered by cz-ub as there is too much to deal with wrt importation and ATF. Jeff Pfeifer

For what it`s worth, be sure to try a HS on a heavy kicker before you buy one. Oh, before you fire the gun,... remove any and all contact lenses, dental work, fillings, caps, loose teeth, watches and shoes, lest they not be found. Ricks and I did the test shooting with an HS on my 416 and it sucked real bigtime! If they were to add castoff, drop, and weight, maybe it would do, but they are noisey, and recoil is unreal. Why not go with wood? If you are concerned about weather, use a custom made laminate. You will be glad for the extra pound over the weight of the HS. Plastic guns should not be allowed in Africa. Go ahead now people, light up the torches and get a rope! hehe.

Mike, You gotta be kidding. We'd rather see synthetics than those super altra fast magnums. Nothing wrong with putting on a McMillan express stock on the CZ. Pfeifer, does Jim Wisner supply those M70 style 3-pos. safties for the 550 magnum action, and if so can you provide contact details. Regards ------------------

DRB, In his latest catalog, what he has listed that might(?) work is one #9303 for the "BRNO ZKK, with gas flange". I guess I'm just not sure about how close the ZKK and the CZ-550 magnum action are. Also offered is a "bolt stop for BRNO ZKK 600-602, offset, flared to clear our safety #9303 gas flange...$32" - not shure whether this is required though. A phone call to Jim or Jen Wisner should clear all this up though - (360)748-3743 . I plan on asking next time I talk with him, but that may be in a while. A friend emailed Jim the other day with a link to these forums, so maybe he'll pop in sometime and comment. He a good guy and veeeery knowledgeable on big bores and their conversions. Hope this helps - Jeff Pfeifer

DRB, Took a second look and saw RSA so maybe you could try an email to PM Enterprises. Anyway here are the full contact details: Precise Metalsmithing Enterprises PH - (360)748-3743 Regards, JP

Dave, I would`nt kid you..... I can`t imagine ruining the trip of a lifetime to Africa by carrying a plastic gun. I know... it`s probably different if you live there, hell, I live in the Pacific Northwest and lots of folks (not me) use composite stocks here due to all the rain, plus carrying a gun through the thick jungle and young timber is hell on wood (and flesh). I`d be afraid to show my face in Africa with a plastic gun, I`d be afraid the customs people would put me right back on the plane with a warning not to return until I had a "Proper" gun, hehe.

Pfeifer: I thought the Wisner name looked familiar... The 4 station stock duplicating machine I bought early this year was Wisner`s machine. I bought it from the guy that bought it from Wisner. It came with about 700 different patterns for every imaginable rifle and shotgun.... with that many hand made patterns, you know those boys cut on hell of a lot of stocks over the years.... I even got a video the Wisner`s had made showing how to use the machine for new employees I guess. Legen has it that the machine was designed and built by Wisner SR. It will carve 4 stocks at once... though I have no idea why anyone but an outfit like Remington would need to carve 4 at a time... What do the wisner`s do nowadays? Just gunsmithing or is there still a supply store too?

I have a McMillan "Express" stock for a BRNO 602 on my CZ 550 action with 416 Rigby length action (460 GA). I got 4 rounds in magazine with room to spare and a nice fit. 3 position safety and mod 70 trigger from AHR. robbie barkman at ROBAR did the plating (NP3 and Roguard) and stock work. My rifle weighs 10 1/2 pounds with 3 X Luepold and Talley rings. Recoil not a problem. Nice upright pistol grip and wide stock where you have cheek weld. Andy

Andy, Where did you get your Talley rings? I contacted them last week and they said they don't have rings to fit the 550 action (not until end August anyway for fixed rings). I just bought some Warne rings this week while in the US. What did the 3 pos safety cost, and did you have to send the bolt to AHR?

BDR, AHR imports the CZ actions (separate from the complete rifle), which is handled by CZ rep. they installed the Mod 70 trigger and safety. Give Ed Plummer a call if they install or you can. american ed@hunting-rifles.com I think. Andy

[QUOTE]Originally posted by Andy: Hi Andy, The McMillan stock sounds real good. I've contacted them also and looked at there web- sight with the drop box stock they offer. This would be just as good. You have to remove a fair bit of material from the saftey side of the action to make the CZ 550 action fit a 602 designed stock. The MPI stock that I used still had lots of meat in this area and worked out well. The MPI is definately not a drop in stock and requires work in most areas. This is the reason I was hoping that either H-S Precision or McMillan would get enough inquiries to make it worthwhile. 470 Mbogo

Mike Brown, Here's what I know from talking to Jim: Jim & Jen run Precise Metalsmithing Enterprises. Jim's father, Leroy runs Wisner's which makes obsolete reproduction firearms parts for all the good old lever guns and other guns in need... www.gunpartsspecialist.com . Jim did mention in talking over the years that he and his dad did put up alot of walnut blanks and that recently someone was picking up the last lot of it (last year?) as his dad sold the whole lot of them. One of my friends has one of Jim's English walnut blanks for an Enfield P-14 that is nicely shaped. I've read one of your earlier postings about your stock trials...now having one that fits you well. Have you made up anything on the Wisner machine as of yet? Curious as to what you have available in patterns? I live in Boise, Idaho - home of none other than George Hoenig - Mr stockmachine!..although I hear that he hasn't made any of these in a while. He is mainly making the Rotary Round Action rifles/shotguns these days. At a gunshow earlier this year I spent some time talking with George and he is working on a 20G version of the action which will handle the big bores that we all know and love. They are so gorgeous!!! In case you have never seen one go to: www.finefirearms.com/hoenig.html There was also a feature article in "Der Waffenschmied" on these a while back. Go to: JP

Pfeifer: Thats the one. I`m trying to track down the extra blanks that were sold. I`ve been planning a trip down to Goby`s in Oregon for some time now (how am I ever going to get to Africa if I can`t even get as far as Oregon?to get walnut supplies. Have not seen his walnut yet except in pics. Yes the machine is set up, and we have run a dozen or so through it now. My current project is an Exhibition grade Fiddleback Tiger Maple under a stainless 416 Rem M700 with Pacnor barrel. #6 contour, walnut tip and grip caps, with thin slices of Padouk (red orange) in between for a classy touch, Pachmyer Decellerator in brown with a slice of Padouk under it too. I know it`s blasphemy, but after much deliberation, I will probably finish this one in isocyanate powered clear automotive poly with a bit of flex additive in it for absorbing bumps and scratches without cracking. The gun will reside in the Pacific northwest and Poly absolutely is the best for negating the effects of weather. I may knock the shine down to a satin so it isn`t mistaken for a benchrest rifle, hehe. I started with a factory 700 stock, and lengthened the wrist, added a wedge in the wrist to cet castoff, added drop to get 1-7/8" drop at heel. This was done with bondo for the most part. Then I ran the cutter short so more wood would be on the new stock than the pattern. Cut 4 of those before I got it right. One slip and expensive wood is kindling... John adds pillars and long thru-bolts through the wrist for safety. The next off line is a BRNO 602 changed from 375 to either 404 Jeffry, or possibly 375-404, as that`s quicker and easier, and is one awesome critter gitter. I got nearly 700 patterns with the carving machine, many for old lever guns and shotguns. Full length riflestocks filled 8 55gallon drums. Some are dead stock, and others are custom shapes. Lots of sporters and thumbholes and whathave you. Not all cataloged yet. Some were unmarked and John and I are not up to speed on shotgun and lever actions, though I have carved a few lever guns for people now. They look great with Fiddleback maple and I just finished the drying cycle on 115 awesome figured maple blanks, so we will start delivering those to the waiting list soon. Sorry for the long post.
