Anyone shoot these in their .45-70's? I have a Siamese Mauser with 18" bbl. I'm getting 2100+ FPS with 350 gr. Hornadys.

Just want to play around.

I'm curious also, I have a left handed Zastava and am trying to figure out what to do with it. I don't see myself hunting elephant so I would like to use it here in the States for pigs or deer or something. Cast bullets at 1,800 fps will work but I'd like to have a flatter shooting option in case I need to reach out past 200 yards.

I've eyed these off as a buffalo bullet for the .45 Blaser but thus far have stuck with loading 400g Woodleigh PPs at 2120fps and 325g Flex Tips at 2350fps. I'm wary that the flex tips will disintegrate at close range in anything over 100kg, but the recommended impact velocity for the PP is 1900 - 2250 and starting at 2120 it drops below this at 100yards.

What is the recommended impact velocity of the Barnes? At 200 I think the flex tip might be a better option on lighter game

For my use the 350 gr TSX is a perfect bullet in the 458 and is great in a strong bolt 45/70.
I've never been able to recover one from a bear. And I've killed several deer with both the X and TSX and they work great without blood shocking a bunch of meat. As long as a big bone isn't hit. It's best not to hit a big bone with the 458 on a deer. The Flex Tip would just make a horrible mess . like the 350 gr Hornady round nose does.
Another very good 458 bullet is the 350 gr Speer. It has enough of a flat nose to be safe in a tube magazine . It's built tough enough for the 458. I've used it a lot along with the 350 gr X and TSX.

Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

I use the 350 Speer on bear and hogs; it is a very tough bullet and will punch through from any angle at only 1800. As for your 200 plus yard shot; still will have some drop after 150. Just have to practice and know the drops. A barnes at 2100 will work too. Here are the numbers with a 150 yard zero. HOWEVER... a 400 grainer at 2000 fps shoots exactly the same. The point doesn't help on these. It's just for looks, and feeding.
Also, not sure the Barnes 350 will open at 200 yards as it is down to 1500 fps. Call Barnes and let me know.

My cast .459 485 grain flat point works the same at 200 as it does at 50 which is pretty darned well. It also makes me happy to shoot it which is why I do. There are better bullets but there are no finer bullets. Smiler
Happy Magic 458 shooting fellas.

In a 45-70 it would be a good choice..you get some needed velocity and the TSX is noted for great penetration..Its a win win IMO.

Yep and they are very good. 3x Siamese Mausers in 45/70, a Ruger 77 Tang Safety in 450 Marlin and a pre 64, Win 70 in 450 Marlin.

Two of the 45/70s and the Win 70 in 450 Marlin have been to Africa (Namibia) multiple times for PG and multiple head up to mountain zebra and eland. Have only recovered a couple bullets.

Load them to 2275-2300 fps over the Chrono and also take some 325gr CEB solids at the same vel just in case. Slightly compressed load. Just follow the max grains listed in Hogdon's for H4198.

Longest shots have been only 175yds - closest has been under 50yds. The couple we did recover were on a couple of oryx at those longer distances facing straight on in the chest. Skinners recovered them deep in the intestines, past the kidneys. They did expand to maybe an 1/8" larger diameter than the shanks and the petals cut like a buzz saw.

I sight in 1 1/2" at 100yds so just about "on" at 150 and 5-6" low at 200 depending on which rifle - couple differences in barrel length, 20-23".
