A lot depends if it's going to be just for hunting or like me 90% of my rifle use is at the range where more power is fun.
Since scopes are easy to switch back and forth you might get one with some magnification. The Leupold 2X7 being the least expensive that I would suggest and a small Leupold VX-111 being really fancy.
Make sure that the objective will clear the barrel mounted rear sight. Also check now that your cheek weld is not too tight due to low mounts. Mine were on my 1S in .300 Win Mag. Ruger will exchange rings for no charge. Now I have medium height rings.
My .375's have fixed 4X scopes on them. If I could get a new Leupold 4X at a reasonable price that's what I would use but the variables are a better buy. Remember that heavy scopes will fly apart so don't use one. It may not last.

I have a Leupold VXIII 1.5-5 on our .375 H&H NO. 1. Work great. Same scope (almost 1.75-6E) is on the .416 Rigby No. 1, another 1.5-5 on the M77 416 Rigby, a 1.75-6 on the .45-70 Marlin and another 1.5-5 on a Browning A-Bolt 12 ga. These scopes hold up, they work, and you won't be sorry.
JR Let me ask you a question here as well! Is your Xer scope in Ruger rings or does anyone make an extention ring for the Ruger rifles to mount an intermediat Eye relief scope forward, A-LA scout scope?

I think the Vari x 11 2-7x33 represent good value and they can handle recoil I have one on my .416 Rigby & so has my mate. I also have a 2.5 compact leupold on my 45/70 and I will be putting one of these on my .585 as well. I think any of the smaller leupolds should serve you well.

My scope sits in Burris brand rings that fit the Ruger integral mounting system. They are the signature kind, the ones with the synthetic insert. I've found these rings to be superior in holding scopes against recoil. As to the availability of an extension ring I'm afraid that I'm in the dark on that one. Also I'm not positive but I think that my scope got dropped from the line up.

Its not really a scout type scout that has umpteen inches of eye relief but it's not like a normal scope that only provides 3-4". If my memory serves me it's got 7-14 inches relief, or about perfect on hard kicking gubs!
