...does anybody think they are really going to get more than 3 shots off on a charge...

Let's see first shot - not good...by the time you have fired the 3rd one from the magazine one of you has already lost.

If it is not over by then...there will be time to reload.

Not saying don't do it for the CDI factor but it is pretty impractical.

Kinda like California outlawing magzines to 10 rounds...as if i can't reload in under 1.5 seconds.

6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.

No.

But some guys succeed in emptying their gun BEFORE the charge starts. That is where the greater magazine capacity becomes important. (i.e., not all charges start when you have a full rifle.)

I guess if you have never needed more than 3 down without having plenty of time to reload it is a myth.

But it is not charges where you need a big magazine. When crap is happening all around you...shooting the intended victim and others and getting charges at the same time....ooooh, baby, bring on the BIG magazine! Smiler

I should have added a portion of my technique...

If your aren't shooting

You should be reloading

If you aren't shooting or reloading you should be moving

If you are shooting, reloading, or moving, you should be calling for friends with more guns

MIke,

You point is very understandable...

BUT....One of my African croanies does quite a bit of PAC work, there's one instance where more is better.

AND, a couple of years ago I was faced with what appeared to be the necessity of dispatching a buch of pissed-off Eles....It was on that day , that I realized 2 things:

1) Nothing but nothing ever again on safari smaller than .375 (I was carrying a 300 H&H with Noslers!)

2) As there were "several" animals to deal with "4-down and one in" was and is the way to go with regards to magazine rifles.

I know, I know, this was a very isolated occurrance, but as we say out here...."Better to have an not need, than to need and not have"..

My 375 H&H holds 5 down and one in the chamber. On several occasions I have put 4 or 5 rounds into a buffalo before it gave up the ghost. Probably all those rounds weren't needed as the first one would have killed it but the old maxim of continue shooting as long as it is standing or running and it is in sight holds true for me.

Your logic might be right, but the way I look at it, more is better. If someone gave you the option of two otherwise identical rifles, one that held four down and one that held three down, let me guess which one you choose. Smiler

Vapodog,

Reloading a double rifle is much quicker and easier than reloading a magazine rifle.

Also it is even quicker to reload one in a double rifle.

The magazine rifle gives more "uninterupted" shots before requiring reload, but the reload takes much more time.

I'm sure that all have read somewhere, sometime that you should never shoot either type empty, just in case. Shoot one of a double and reload ... etc. Shoot three or four out of a bolt and then reload.

I tried it with a double and it isn't that practicle - especially when your first shot is less than perfect. It would be more practicle with a bolt though. Still when you need to shoot, you need to shoot, even if its your last round.

JPK,
there was a bit of "tongue-in-cheek" to my post but in all seriousness the number of rounds is something I have to chuckle at sometimes as I've read Capsticks comments about buff taking 19 MAJOR CALIBER hits and still keep coming.

There comes a time when you run out regardless of the amount you have.

With a double one gets two AIMED shots.....and most agree that should be enough.

I agree that a double is easily restocked but a bolt isn't difficult to shovel a round into as well.......after all, by the time a bolt has fired four rounds, the target should be sufficiently close as to not need more ammo!

Fla30-06 post is great.....they look cool! That is hitting the nail harder than most here.

Guys of course more is better...I am just stiring the pot and needling about the practicality.

I cannot the think of a time when I fired more than four rounds and didn't have an opportunity to reload.

Maybe its law enforcement training but the first thing I do after shooting when therre is even 5 seconds is to top off my magazine.

Not all charges are flat out without stopping. The animal can stop after being shot again, fall over and get up again etc. More time to hit it again.

The closest I have come to a charge is a scrub bull and it came running down hill seeming to look for me but unsure where I was. Three shots however, only one after it was hit initially, dropped it OK.

I am this second tour buck sargent in the ranger company, and we are doing a CAP thing (Combined Action Platoon) with some O3's and one of them says "you army guys really need those new 30-round mags, we get our work done with 20's...". His gunny suggests he drop and entertain us with 20 and says. "anyway you comrades in arms can get us some of them...?". We do, and it was the only time I have ever heard a gunnery sargent say anything really nice about the army and mean it!

It's a shame 465 H&H is not back from hunting elephants in Zimbabwe, or he could tell you about surprising four old cows on a PAC thing, and having six or eight more come out of the 5am fog and introduce themselves IIRC. I would have been wishing FN made an assault rifle in 500NE 3" mayself about that time.

Several to me means at least three. The three I am referring to were not charges but buff running across my front after the initial shot. By shooting them about 4 " higher than normally recommended for a high heart shot they go down on their nose and if your quick with a bolt gun they only make a couple of steps before the next one hits them. I can clearly remember 3 but there may have been and probably were more that required 4 or more shots.

Of the buff I have killed, two got more than four rounds, including a final "its dead but..." insurance shot. But that was because they were still visible and still alive. Neither needed the last couple. A moments wait would have brought the same result.

My thinking is if its visible and alive, even down with its head up - shoot it!

I should add that I have emptied my rifle twice shooting running buff and hippo.

That's five shots one time, and six another, with ten hits and one miss.

Both times I was reloading when the animals fell down and died.

What happened to all the grandfathered mags? Did they have to be shipped out of state and replaced with 10 rounders?

Phil,

I did. Understand most of this is just good fun.

I was simply responding to the post of BIG1LOST about a five round drop box magazines.

Hey more is better but we have a tendency to try to accomplish things with technology (bigger magazine) as opposed to tactics even when the accomplishemnt of technology requires extraordinary effort or money.

Hey money is no object for lots of folks.

The issue that is food for thought is how many times...will I need more than four (3 down & 1 up WITHOUT the opportunity to reload AND would I not be a better rifleman if I learned better gunhandling skills like reloading quickly and maybe even picked a cartridge more sutiable for the DG to big with.

This kinda remins me when I was building a lightweight mountain rifle and I was only able to it to 6/23 pounds scoped and loaded and was trying to figure out how to get it down to 6 1/2 lbs...my gunsmith told me...GO TO THE GYM INSTEAD.

1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

In my own similarly benighted Massachusetts, grandfathered high capacity pistol magazines are just that, grandfathered, and perfectly legal to own and use.

Thank God for small favors.

How is it possible to tell if a particular mag is grandfathered or not? Do you need to have a store receipt to show when it was purchased?

Dan,

Again not sure. However, right after the legislation the hi cap magazine were getting stamped "LE/Govt Use Only". I don;t know if that was national thing or california thing

Mike!

It was a national thing. As it worked out you could buy replacement parts for your high capacity magazines so it was no problem to replace all the parts and have more. There was absolutely no way to enforce the law.

I can live with 3 down, I can live with two in a double, I can get by with Rugers single shot., but I have shot a heck of a lot of buffalo more than 5 or 6 times, and the great majority took 3 or more shots and I know for a fact that two of them took 13 and 15 470s and 500s respectively on two ocassions, before they expired. They were not charging in either case. I have that on film from one of my clients, btw.

I like/prefer a drop box and the extra rounds, and again I can get by with less, and like I said there are usually several guns banging in a charge. The PHs, yours, your buddies, the game scout (God forbid) and maybe a few more.

Bottom line is the extra rounds can't hurt, and on a very rare ocassions could possibly even save ones life, not a bad idea. Same can be said for the use of a double, its certainly not necessary, but not a bad idea if you can afford one..
