Is the 376 Steyr a DG cartridge?

FjoldIs the 376 Steyr a DG cartridge?
I'm looking at all of my options for buying/building a left handed DG gun and want to stay with a factory loaded cartridge. Right now I'm considering converting a LH Ruger MkII 7MM Mag, so my options are apparently the 376 Steyr and the 458 Win mag. I have never been enamored with the 458 but the ballistics of the Steyr have me asking if it packs enough punch to be a true DG cartridge?
Hornady factory loads list both the 225 and the 270 grain softpoints at 2600 fps but no solid loads. What is a realistic velocity for 300 grain solids from a 22-24 inch barrel in the 376 Steyr?

FjoldI'd like to do a Buffalo/ plains game one gun trip and use a 375 for both. The 458 just doesn't seem right for plains game. With the 450 grain X bullet (2300 fps) zeroed at 100 yards it drops 6.2" at 200 and 12.5" at 250.

GeorgeSFjold,
If you HAVE to use a R-ugh-er

, turn it into a .458 Win. Mag. and load 450gr. 'X' and 450gr. Bridger solids (when they become available again).
If and when my gunsmith ever frees up enough time to start my .300Win.Mag. to .458Win.Mag. conversion, those are the bullets I intend to use in my LH Model 70.

My .376 Steyr Prohunter does 2450 fps with 62.5 grains Varget and a 300 grain Swift A-Frame. Over 4000 foot-pounds of energy and .375 or larger bore is a dangerous game rifle, keeping in mind the recoil / precision trade-off for us mere mortals. I'm building a .416 Taylor and traded off my .375 H&H and .458 Win Mags, always looking for the perfect compromise. My 98 Mauser should be 8 1/2 pounds all up with a 22 inch barrel. Good luck in your choice!

vapodogIMO the .376 is a DG cartridge....it will push a 300 grain solid at 2450 from a 24" barrel.
Pack about 61.5 grains of IMR 4895 behind it and let it fly.

jeffeossoFjold,
if the 375 HH is then the 376 is... I can BARELY break 2500 with 300 gr pills in mine, with acceptable pressure.. i've got a 25" barrel.
But, then again, rem and win and fed have been loading the 375 hh "at 2500" wihch means somewhere close, but under, for 100 years..

tiggertateI agree that it is but the 270 gr Hornady bullets are not. They are too soft for the big and mean stuff.

HunterJimIt is a dangerous game cartridge. If you follow the school that recommends down-loading the 300 grain .375 H&H loads to the 2,450 fps range, there is no debate. The .376 Steyr also operates in the same region as the 9.3X62 with its 286 grain loads, and the 9.3 if you haven't noticed is a current cult DG favorite.
Since the .376 Steyr is one of my pet rocks, I asked various makers at the SCI Convention about their plans. Hornady intends to keep selling the ammunition, but also expects to replace the 270 grain with their Interbond. Nosler is considering adding it to their Custom Ammunition line with a Nosler Partition bullet. As noted above Superior already lists it in their catalog.
