Has anyone hunted dangerous game with the Browning 50 caliber machine gun carteridge? Imagine, 750 grain FMJ at 2700 fps would do on cape buffalo and elephant! Anyone with experience? Is this legal in Africa? Jeff in Texas

A close friend of mine took a Buff in Zim with a Maadi Griffin/LAR .50 BMG. He used a monolithic solid and took a full frontal shot. The Bullet exited under the tail. The effect was not that dramatic. Like most Buff shot that way, it ran off about 75 yrds and died.-Rob

Jeff I used to do a little armchair comparison between the 50 BMG and 577 T REX. By using the 416 weatherby and 470 nitro. The bigger in both examples is about 30% greater surface area but 30% less kinetic energy. For the 416 versus 470, the 470 is considered the better stopper traditionally. So the 50BMG as mighty as it is would take a back seat for close range stopping to the ultra large elephant bores, from where I am sitting in my armchair anyway Karl.
