When I had my M1910 take down I used Hornady 270 grain Round Nosed bullets. Those are discontinued, and I am just about out. Does anyone know if Kynoch uses the Woodleigh .375" 270 grain SN bullet? 9.5x57MS = 375 Rimless 2 & 1/4" Nitro Express Thanks ![]()

Yes, to my knowledge Kynoch use the 270 Woodleigh... they use thes bullets for all their ammo...soft or solids.. I just ordered a batch of 9,5x57 from them for my own M1910...

Thanks for that info. Will not the other bullets like Sierra or Hornady work in the 9.5MS? I realise that the tough bonded bullets would need higher velocities like the H&H to really expand but what about the regular cup & core bullets? "When the wind stops....start rowing. I built a 400/375 Nitro belted, same thing power wise as the 9.5. Trying to find a bullet that would expand at the velocities these oldies put forth is the tough part. A nice old bluenose soft is what we need.

For deer and pigs a low cost bullet would be the 235 Seer. For a full weight bullet that will expand at 9.5x57 velocities take a look at a Hawk in maybe the .030 jacket. www.hawkbullets.com DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

I'll second the Hawk bullets. A lot of people on this board dont like them, but they are perfect for lower velocity applications, like this.

Thanks guys, My research turned up those two names. Too bad Hornady discontinued their old 270 grain Round Nose. ![]()

Confirmed that both Hawk and Woodleigh will make just this type of bullet. Life is good. ![]()

I use the Speer 235 gr. .375 dia. in my 1910, like Tony suggested. They shoot fine, but I don't know how they perform on game. I've been told by mstarling that they shed lead fairly bad in the wound channel when used on deer. ____________________________ .470 & 9.3X74R Chapuis' Tikka O/U 9.3X74R Searcy Classics 450/.400 3" & .577 C&H .375 2 1/2" Krieghoff .500 NE Member Dallas Safari Club

Please inform me about this cartridge. Is it well liked these days? I'll bet it's fun to shoot. I've got a VZ 24 action, a PacNor .375 #4 barrel, 12" twist, 3 groove, and I know where there is a reamer. Dies could be an issue due to cost for custom. Then there's the 376 Steyr, which obviously could be loaded down with H4895 or such to duplicate the old boy, but still have reserve thump to load up to if needed. Interest in this round cannot be separated from interest in the MS rifle. Mannlicher Schoenauer rifles and the specific MS cartridge go together. I would never try to build a rifle on a Mauser action for a MS cartridge. 9.5X57MS rifles do come up at Holts auctions - there are 2 in the March auction but the stock of one is pinned. One of them is an Evans retail and both are take down models with tang peep sights. I have one like that but with a hard wood replacement stock that is also pinned. Good luck in your search. I have killed a few deer with the 270 Speer loaded to @2500fps in a 375 H&H. It worked great, I have never recovered a bullet. I have also used a Hornady 220gr Flat point in the 375 H&H at @2500 on a few deer with excellent resulots as well. I did recover one of these bullets, shot into a doe at 175 yards. The doe was facing me and the bullet was recovered perfectly expanded in the rear ham when I butchered the deer. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

My interest in this cartridge is more commercial. If enough people want the correct case and bullet combination over a powder charge that duplicates the original (facilitates sight alignment, etc.), I would produce this caliber in nice "ten-packs" for slipping into a shirt pocket. When I owned that Model 1910 take down (yeah, I never should have sold it OR the carbine) model - it kicked pretty well at both ends. This even after a previous owner had removed the buttplate and attached a Silvers recoil pad in the 1940s. I tend to think of the 9x57 Mauser, 9x56 M-S, 9.3 x 57 Mauser, 9.5 x 57 M-S/.375 Rimless Nitro Express 2&1/4" as very similar beasts. 100 years ago there was the same competition for the upscale shooting dollar as today. Mauser and Mannlicher Schoenauer were offering very similar products at the same time. It puts me in mind of the RSAUMs versus WSMs competition of the last decade. Here is a link to a cross-referenced Excel file put together by Todd Johnson at the Lone Star Armory: http://www.lone-star-armory.co...assic-Cartridges.pdf I think that any of these cartridges would be marvelous in a slide actioned or lever actioned rifle for the dark timber. Or any bolt rifle with a properly proportioned stock. OK back to the real thread... ![]()
