Just a quick question... Anyone use one in .375? Looks like a great rifle (M70/Dak76 type clone?). Was it a drop box magazine for the .375? Was the muzzle brake std from factory? Any comments otherwise? Cheers

I never used one, but they are a pretty close copy of the Dakota 76 action, down to the same bolt stop/release mechanism requiring the same cutout under the rear Talley scope base to allow that lever to swing. Same receiver profiles front and rear. Yes very close to a Winchester or Dakota, and made by Beretta would have to be pretty good. Is it a flat bottom action like a Dakota 76 or an M70? Or is it a pipe/cylindrical action like the cheaper Dakota of late? "Mato" is the Lakota Sioux word for "bear." That is the Native American tribe living around Sturgis, South Dakota, the home of Dakota Arms, in the Paha Sapa (Black Hills). Lakota, Dakota, Nakota, are all Sioux tribes. Makes me wonder if Beretta got "Siouxed" over the Mato. Sort of the same way General Custer got Siouxed at Little Bighorn. They don't make the Mato anymore.

I believe these rifles were made with Dakota 97 actions. Similar to the 76 but made out of the cylindrical style. ****************************************************************** R. Lee Ermey: "The deadliest weapon in the world is a Marine and his rifle." ****************************************************************** We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! Roscoe, I believe you are correct. I Googled cursorily, enough to find out that the Mato was indeed made with a Dakota action, and was discontinued in 2002. Yes, the cylindrical/pipe action Model 97 Dakota. So, nobody got Siouxed. Dakota was working in cahoots with Beretta on that deal. The same rifle would still be available as the Dakota 97 Long Hunter, in its various iterations of walnut or synthetic, starting at about $2000 US.

Thanks, I summarily also came up with some net info...and the dakota relationship. Seems the .375 was factory supplied with the brake and it did have a drop box. I wonder how well it was liked (for the short time it was made?)

kayaker, I had a new Beretta Mato .375 H&H. I beleieve the purchase price was around $1800 USD. The rifle certainly has good looks. My understanding was originally the action was produced by Dakota. The action was the cylindrical style Dakota Model 97. Somewhere in the production life Beretta took over production of the action. The Mato action remained very similar to the M97 with some minor changes, however, I don't know exactly what the changes were. Yes, it is a detachable box magazine. Yes, the threaded detachable muzzle brake was standard from the factory and came with a solid cap for use in the field. I felt the rifle barrel was a little light for a .375, I didn't like the rifle balance, and I had continuous feeding problems. The rifle looked good but didn't work out for me. Happy Holidays, Buliwyf

The Mato started life as a Dakota 76. Somebody stuck it on a mandrel and turned it round thinking they could use all the Dakota magazine boxes & floormetals. Oops! Nothing left on the bottom of the action to hold the top of the mag box. Beretta kept wanting to lower the price more and more. After the price got crunched lower Beretta said put a detachable box mag that looks like a custom Argentine floormetal for the same price. Lots of pissing back & forth. Later Dakota brought out the 97. Can't remember now if the rear tang of the action was the only difference???

No wonder I could never get to the bottom of "what exacly the action was" when talking to Beretta. The action was on a mandrel while the Beretta rep was on the phone with me so he was telling the truth....he didn't know what is was either. Well, scratch my comments about "minor changes" and change them to say several thousand "minor cuts" on the mandrel. B
