I have been researching various DG rifles. The Heym Express and Ryan Breeding rifles are what interest me the most. I understand there is a big differance in price and wait time. The Heym uses a .780 bolt diameter bolt while the Ryan Breeding {Granite Mountain action} uses a .750 diameter bolt. Isn't bigger better when a 505 Gibbs cartridge is envolved?

Do you think the Heym would be just as reliable as the Ryan Breeding?

I am concerned about feed, function, and fit. I will be useing iron sights.

Anybody have any hunting experiance with these rifles?

th .750 and .780 are sufficient to use the 505 Gibbs but more is better like you say.

.750" is sufficient for the .505 Gibbs and there is no genuine extra advantage in .780".

The Breeding is a true custom rifle while the Heym is a semi-standard production rifle. I have owned a Heym and I have hunted with a Breeding. There is absolutely no question that the fit and finish of the Breeding is much finer than the Heym, but the Heym is a very nice rifle and it stands head and shoulders above Dakota.

Personally I would get the Breeding if you can justify the extra dollars.

My Heym fed FMJs perfectly but had a slight hangup with softs coming off the right rail. But to be fair, it was a .600 NE which is probably not easy to get to feed in a bolt gun.

The Breeding .505 I hunted with fed everything perfectly, and the action was extremely slick. Also, the Breeding had the best iron sights I have ever seen on any rifle. It is a true double square bridge magnum mauser action (by GMA) with Obendorf straight drop bolt handle. The Heym is a modified Mauser, with a non-typical ejector, bolt release and bolt handle. Not bad, but not completely traditional.

Used Heyms in .416 bring about $5500. Probably a bit more for a .505. Although I have searched, I have never found or heard of a Breeding gun being re-sold.

First, Thanks very much for the replys.

Second, I have more questions.I looked on Ryan Breeding's website, and seen he had a 5 shot gibbs. 4 down and 1 up. By chance is this the same capacity rifle you used. If so with the magazine box fully loaded how did the first round come up and cycle.

How many animals did you take with this rifle?
