Sounds like a great rifle, George. Even the bolt is on the correct size. Who are you going to have put it together for you?

By the way.... please make sure it has a 14 1/4" LOP so I can borrow it Jeff< !--color-->

Any gun in that power range (meant to be carried in your hands) will have significant recoil. You have to make the choice whether you want to carry a heavier rifle, or absorb more recoil.

Of course, when you touch a round off at the range, people usually a) ask you 'WTF are you shooting?!', and b) decline your offer to shoot it.

Canuck,

It shows how to do it. Estimates for having a pro do it range from $150-$350.

Some thoughts:

1. I personally prefer a nicely done custom stock and would budget about $1500 for that.

2. While gloss blue looks nice in the showroom, matte blue or parkerizing works a lot better in the field.

3. If you were thinking of engraving, may I suggest having Mike375's mugshot engraved on the floorplate?

500grains,

The .458WM is going to be built for practical purposes; any cu$tom touche$ will be reserved for a .416.

As for defiling one of my guns with Mike375's face...not frigging likely! I think toilet paper embossed with his visage is MUCH more appropriate.

Mauser,
The extractor has already been ordered. The Pachmayr F990 has baffles which I'd like to cover up, hence the leather cover.

Tonto,
Yes, it is going to be a .458 Win. Mag. I already have a .470 Capstick, so a Lott would be somewhat redundant.
Both my .375H&H and .470 Capstick have the Monte Carlo stock, and I don't have any problems with recoil, but it might just work better for me than it does you.

What are you doing with the bolt handle?

George, may I ask, if you want a .458, why not just load your .470 capstick down a bit?

George, I can understand that. Personally I am going in the opposite direction. I will soon be cleaning out the safe to help defray the costs of hunting elephant. I can afford guns or hunting but not both, so I will reduce my weaponry to a reasonable number and spend the cash on trophy fees.

Most stock Winchester extractors are made of sintered powder metal and are not spring tempered like they are supposed to and they become britle and break easily at times. On the other hand, custom extractors are machined from barstocks and are spring tempered for better functionality and maximum reliability. It is not absolutely nessesary to replace the factory one but if you are gonna build a custom rifle then why not go all the way.

George S & Mauser,

What`s the story with the factory extractor? Is the original not spring steel or what? I am having a Model 70 416 Rem Mag customised and had no idea that the extractor was substandard. My smith has not mentioned anything.

I would be greatful for any info!!

GeorgeS,
Could you e-mail me if the gunsmith doing your rifle is the one Laramie. I know about the one in Casper. The reason I ask is that I am going to have to have some work done & I want someone who knows DGR's.

500grains,

Although your suggestion makes absolutely perfect sense, I would rather have a .458WM and a .470 Capstick. The overlap doesn't bother me, as I have so many rifles with overlapping abilities already.

Once this is done, I'll have a .416 built, and I'll have just about every caliber from .172" to .475" covered.

Roger,

I don't know. I've never seen Ruger's set-up. Perhaps one of our fellow members can post a photo.

I think the leather will try to inflate when the rifle is fired due to the air trapped in the holes. The leather bulge at the wood junction doesn't do much for me. If you want a soft solid pad for this rifle try a Kickeez. Its a learning experience to finish them to say the least but it will hold up better than anything leather covered. I'm sure someone can offer advise finishing those pads.

Sorry George. I missed that part concerning the recoil plate. Does that work the same as the old Ruger setup that they had on their 458's?

George--Here is picture of a recoil plate. They are called

a bedding bar also. This is Ruger made.I use them on all actions of regular size.Gun Parts has them and a screw for about ten bucks, right now although don't know how long they will last..I use them with Ruger barrel band in

end of stock and it takes recoil from my blasters fine.

Will work in any stock, saves the cost of a barrel lug.

Just inlet the stock for the bar and narrow the recoil

lug on the action to fit into it.Ed

Hi Roger,

As I mentioned above, the gunsmith wants to use a recoil plate similar to what Ruger is using on its RSM. Hopefully, it will work out, and he won't have to buy me a new stock.

I know the F990 is 'fugly', but I am curious to see if it is as recoil absorbent as folks say. I can always live with it as is, cover the baffles with duct tape , or replace it with the Decelerator pads I use on my other rifles.

Thanks for your suggestions.

George

George

A couple of things I can think of that have already been mentioned.

#1 is the barrel lug. I would definitely put some thought into that.

#2 is that 990 pad. I agree with you they are butt ugly(waiver on the pun). The leather on the pad won't help. It will sink into the vents to a certain extent. I hear the fellows that shoot the thumpers talk about how great this pad is and I don't doubt what they are saying in the least, but I can't stand the looks of that ugly SOB.

I have an 8 1/2 lb 458 with a London Guns pad on it. It works well. It is a solid, but flexible pad. If you don't like the traditional red, this pad could be leather covered.

Just my thoughts

Dave,

Thanks for your suggestion. I had considered the fiber optic sight in conjunction with the window hood, but don't know if the fiber optic is stout enough.

Good point about the hood and peep appearing to be of the same diameter. I'll have to think about this some more.

Keep 'em coming, folks!
