Tricky one. Can anyone give an estimate of the following for 450 and 500 nitro?

Velocities with 480 and 570 gn respectively at 40,000 PSI.

Well that depends upon the powder used, now doesn't it.

For the 500 NE, using a SUITABLE powder, one can get ~ 2150 fps with a 570 gr Woodleigh SP at ~ 40,000 psi.

I assume you are referring to the 450 3.25" NE. Again with a SUITABLE powder, one can get ~ 2000 fps with the 480 gr Woodleigh SP at ~ 40,000 psi. 2150 fps with the 480 gr Woodleigh will run you ~ 47,000 psi.

With the best powder(DB Ball-Like W760))--IN
A 450NE with 120 gr- 480 gr bullet-45k will get you 2400fps.I have done it in developement of my 458HE. I built my brass from 450NE cases
and did a 3inch version, a 3.25 in version. and last one 3.45 in which is my HE.The 3.25 in
version is same as regular 450NE.And I got
2600 fps at 55k with 500gr. In my HE 2800.Ed.

Ed,

Those are impressive ballistics, particularly when one considers that a 460 Weatherby magnum will not do 2600 fps at a measely 55,000 psi and has ~ 10% more case volume than the 450 3.25" NE. Using W760 it would be in the upper 60's, and would take A LOT more than 120 grains of it too boot! I know I have done it, that is use a 460 Weatherby magnum with W760 and a 500gr Hornady. Perhaps this difference is performance has something to do with lot to lot powder variation. I have heard that Olin powders (Winchester) varies more lot to lot than practically anyone else.

Forgot to mention with a long 31 inch
barrel. And it wasn't the really high pressures
that you mention as these cases had soft heads. The few Bertrams I used at first with real hard bases would do about 7% more velocity than the above figures. And never give any
expansion to measure. My 458HE, compressed load,
135 gr of W-760 does 2800 in soft headed
brass.IF A LOTT with half inch shorter case, smaller diameter case, gets 2300, then a 450NE can easily get 2400 with right powder at lower pressures. Now if you overdo the hack-em off,
short barrel syndrome, you can drop back to 2200.Ed

Most doubles are designed not to exceed 16 tons, that equates to 32,000 PSI does it not..A searcy will handle more than that but I don't know just how much more..
