OK.....After getting rid of a prefectly good .416 Taylor some time back I decided I had to have another. My idea was to get a tang safety, Ruger M77 and rebarrel.......I have a M77 now, a .338 WM. The good news is also the bad news........it's in almost MINT condition! I just can't bring myself to de-barrel this one.......I'm going to make the decision after I shoot the .338....if it's a shooter it will look like I have a .338 in my battery.

OK.....I now have an unchambered/unthreaded Douglas .416, #5 contour, CM barrel...sitting here for the project.

I am beginning to think that I now have a .338 WM for keeps and have been trying to decide what route to go with the .416.....should I go the 'cheap' route and get a VZ-24 action or should I go the MRC route??? Since I no longer have a long action donor (the .338 WM I think I'll keep 'as-is')I have thought about chambering the barrel to .416 Remington.

What in the HELL should I do???

P.S. PLEASE....no TROLL nonsense on this thread

Wes,

I cannot imagine it will be too difficult to locate another Ruger chambered in .338WM (or 7mmRM, or .300Win.).

Just pick up another and build your .416 Taylor, since you liked the round so much. At least you'll have something a bit different.

I would go with the MRC action for such project. In fact, I am planning on a 416 project and debating whether to build a 416 Taylor or 416 Ultramag - favoriting a beltless case.

Unless you do the work yourself, the VZ isn't the cheap way to go. The safety, bolt, scope mounting, bottom metal et al add up to way more then an action already set up for a bolted mag.

So look for another generic belted mag, or get an MRC action and go from there.

Hi there

How about a CZ action? I am told that they are cheap in the states. But if they are cheaper here I'll trade you a Ruger for a CZ. A complete CZ 550 mag in 416. is about 1000$ here in Denmark, a Ruger is more, so if a Ruger in 416 Rigby is less over there we could swap rifles..
