This is the 2008 First Edition.
Only $29.95 for the hardcopy.

By Michael Bussard.
Check out the availability of this info online at
www.bluebookinc.com
("Online Subscriptions" in the header on the home page)

Some gleanings:

Chapter 43: Proprietary Cartridges - Obsolete

"Newton Calibers" pp. 553-554 crams 6 cartridge drawings and a table of ballistics on these six:
.22
.256
.30
.33
.35
.40 Newton: 301-grain bullet @ 3,040 fps for 6,180 fpe Eeker

NASS Canadian Magnum Calibers is the next section in that chapter.
A-Square is also included in that chapter.

Chapter 44: WILDCAT AND EXOTIC CARTRIDGES

P. O. Ackley and J. D. Jones get some detailed coverage, and then there is a two-page, three-columns-per-page listing of other recent wildcats including this sample:

.395 Tayanka (sic) ... typo ... .395 Tatanka Big Grin
.416 B&M
.425 Fossdal
.50 B&M
.500 Mbogo
.585 Belted Hubel Express
.666 Teufel
.700 Hubel Express

Above cartridges are from members Bent, Ed, Jay, Michael, and yours truly. Big Grin

And the last page in the book is not numbered, but it would be page number 792, a tongue in cheek finis:

"PS: Dingbat Cartridges"

1. .17 Incinerator (a .17/50 BMG)
2. .22 Tuba Magnum (dunce-cap-shaped funnel case with .22 bullet)
3. .270/500 Nitro Brushbasher Express (rebated case body, not a mere rim rebate)
4. .308 Kerplunk (looks like a 9mm Luger or smaller pistol case driving a 220-grain rifle bullet)
5. .300 Rimless, Beltless, Nitro Express M1 Carbine 3-3/16 Inch (looks like a soda straw)
6. .500 Pleated, Accordion Express
"Excess case volume in large caliber rifle cartridges has long been a headache for African hunters. This clever new cartridge solves this problem." (complete with cartridge drawings)

Lots of good technical info too. Wink

jimatcat,
COTW is a great resource too.
I have all eleven editions of COTW.
Ammo Encyclopedia is worthwhile addition to my library!

Since that 1965 first edition of COTW by Frank C. Barnes, edited by John T. Amber, both now deceased, it has been edited and re-issued every 3 to 8 years, varies.

Michael Bussard, author of Ammo Encyclopedia was the editor of 7th Ed. COTW in 1993,
the first posthumous edition for Frank C. Barnes, who passed in 1992.
Then M. L. "Mic" McPherson edited the 8th & 9th Eds. in 1997 and 2000.
10th Ed. by Stan Skinner, 2003.
11th Ed. by Stan Skinner, 2006.

This Ammo Encyclopedia is a bigger book, and packed full, no wasted space.
Mike Bussard was well aware of COTW, having been an editor of it.
He has made it a complimentary and bigger book, with a lot of useful "stuff" you won't find in COTW.

COTW has dropped some cartridges and added new ones along the way, struggling to not get much over 500 pages.

Ammo Encyclopedia helps blow the lid off COTW. Still not all inclusive, but wow!

michael458,
Michael Bussard obviously has a good eye for worthy wildcats. Wink

The 470 Mbogo is clearly the Rodney Dangerfield of cartridge books.

Canuck,
I was surprised to see the 500 Mbogo listed, and no 470 Mbogo.
The 500 Mbogo obviously gives credit to the 470 Mbogo of Dave Estergaard.

However, remember that the 470 Mbogo got an entire page (pg. 242) in Fred Zeglin's book, Wildcat Cartridges.
Complete with attribution to Dave Estergaard, cartridge diagram/specs, and a load table.

The referenced simple listing of some recent wildcat cartridge names was not all inclusive, just a sample.

The 470 Mbogo deserves granddaddy status now, since it hails from the 1990s. That would require as much attention as P.O. Ackley, and J. D. Jones.

Gil Van Horn certainly deserves a chapter of his own, rather than the few entries that are there.

A second edition could bee over 1000 pages, 2000 pages, or drive both author and editors insane ...

I am overjoyed they were able to get that much between two covers.

Yes,Michael Bussard does indeed have a good eye for worthy wildcats! As Conuck says there are some obvious omissions, even my own 458 B&M and the 50 B&M AK, which had their own little bit of fame. JD had a bit in American Handgunner in the July 2008 issue, and Aaron Carter did a piece in Shooting Illustrated in October 2008 on the 458 B&M. Then there have been various other tidbits in Safari times and the 2008 Gun Digest about the 50 and other B&M cartridges. And for this to pick up on the 416 B&M and the 50 B&M????

At any rate, like you said, there are lot's out there, I am proud to see them in any capacity, as I know you are too! Congrats!

amazon.com lists this as a paperback only? Is that right? out of stock so must be popular. The amazon price is 29.95 list discounted to 19.77 when available.

This is not like Barnes. The Barnes Ctg Of the World does not have drawings and missing most of the big bore wildcats talked about on this forum.

Yes, paperback, same page size(~8.5x11in) as COTW , but with over 200 more pages of more densely packed info.
It has more historical/timeline/developmental coverage.
No one source is going to have it all.
That is why I need more bookcases.
The internet only has on it what someone has chosen to upload or create online. It is sadly deficient on desired info too.
Firearms and ammo is a huge field of trivia, history, science, antiquaria ... is that a word, or did I just make it up? Wink

2RECON,
It is a good compliment to COTW.
No one source gets it all correct or covers the entire field.
However it is outstanding in the field. I am hoping for an expanded second edition if the staff does not go bonkers trying to keep it under 1000 pages. Wink

BTW, keep your eyes peeled for any references to 10.03mm projectile diameter or barrel groove diameter.
I am thinking German and British rifles from late 19th century had them.
Any rocks turned over would be appreciated. thumb

Hi Michael,
yeah...looks good. But, not important, the UKM is CIP-aprooved, so not a REAL Wildcat anymore.
My 9,5x70 ( "Tornado") is a Wildcat, but will not stay that status.....so it looks i´ve got do do some more....

My amazon.com order was just canceled. Book unavailable? I believe they sell with a small margin and their must have been complains from the High $$$ markup sellers. Aka, those who cater to gun owners.

So, I called blue book and confirm they do have copies in stock ready to ship today. I ordered one for just $15 more than Amazon. Yea, kick me, I am a gun owner too? I even buy factory loaded big bore ammo.

May I have another, sir?

The last time I looked, they were available at www.ammo-one.com (at list price).
He has some other books listed also, but those are probably of limited interest to most guys here.

I am totally bummed. The book does not cover these wildcats ctgs. No data for any mbogo or hubel ctg. Not even a brief commentary or description.

I see I did not read close enough. RIP says list. Wishful thinking then? Who cares about a list, whats that?

I suggest you all take your time and wait for the 18.00 copies and cheep/free shipping.

Hey fourbore,
If it was your baby you would appreciate it.
Like seeing your son's name "listed" in the hometown paper report of the barbecue festival roadrace, even if he was only third in his age class! Cool
None of the books can do an adequate job of covering it all.
That is why we must resort to: www.accuratereloading .com

Being on that list is a fairly big deal and along
with the time I've taken to put info out
around the net, gets people asking about them..
That and my collector friends putting cases
out over the net. Gets people talking and looking
and if I live long enough, see a bunch more
of the guns around in 585HE and 700HE
And maybe a paragraph or blurb
in the next edition out.Ed.
