I have a Savage 116 in 300 WM and am thinking of getting a 416 Taylor barrel from Midway USA to do a conversion. Does anyone have any expereince on this or thoughts. Just venturing into the BB arena.

Hunter,
are you asking if the barrel is okay, is this a do it yourselfer job, or can any smith do it?

The barrels are usually pretty good, for the hundred bucks you are paying for them. Don't expect a great barrel, but the last 416 taylor I did is shooting .5 groups, with 400gr horn sp, at 2300+/-. However, it's not a do it yourself project, as you'll need a finish reamer and go gages.. and to me (not starting this war again) nogo gages, a barrel and action vise, and a lathe.

Any gunsmith can do this one, and should be pretty reasonable at it, as well.

get a rifle basix trigger, while you are at it.

It's the CHEAPEST way to get a true bigbore, and while the savage aint a crf, it'll do.

btw, have your smith witness mark both barrels, and you keep em. Never know when you might want to shoot the 300 for pronghorn and the 416 for whatever.

I have one sitting in my safe right now. In less than a half hour It could be a 270Win. I bought the same barrel you are questioning and they come finnished reamed and ready to install so if your up to it and want to get the tools most people can pull it off and the finnished product will be no different than someone elses. You can buy the barrel vise but if you print off Midways picture of it on there web site, you can get a local to make you one for next to pennys. As said above, get the head space guages and barrel nut wrench and kazam your in business.

The accuracy sound good. I don't intend to be shooting chucks at 300 yds with it. In fact I really wouldn't be looking for shots over 100 yds. At this point it is just in the thinking stages. Thanks for the input. It will be an inexpensive project as I won the rifle at RMEF about 7 or 8 yrs ago. I has taken one goat in NM as it needed to do some blood letting and has set in the safe since then.

These barrels are chambered with a roughing reamer. You will need a finishing reamer to finish chambering them.

The M98 barrels do need finnished, the Savage ones do not. Check them out for yourself on Midway.
