Recoil ???

jeffsRecoil ???
I've never shot a big bore rifle before. I just shot a deer with my son's .444 and got a little bump from the scope. How does the .444 compare the the recoil from a .375 H&H?

airgun1Hard to compare. Most 444 are light lever guns and tend to wallop you. Most 375H&H are heavier bolt guns which handle recoil better.

mrjulian_1970To attempt to make a comparison:
In a light 7lb lever gun, the 444 shooting a 300gr bullet at 2100 fps will hit with about ~33 ft-lbs of recoil energy.
In a chunky CZ550 at 9lbs, the 375 shooting a 300gr bullet at 2550 will hit with ~45 ft lbs of recoil at roughly the same recoil velocity as the 444.
As Airgun said, it's hard to compare since so much about recoil is subjective, but bottom line, you would very likely admit to a noticeable difference between the two.
If the 444 bumped with you with the scope, the 375 would have likely "left a mark" given the same brow-to-ocular distance and grip.

chuck375Can't disagree, but my friend has a light Marlin 45/70 without a recoil pad. That thing hurts! My CZ 550 in 375 H&H with a Decelerator pad was much easier to shoot. Get a long eye relief scope though.

jeffeossoif you can handle a lightweight, non-autoloading shotgun, you can handle a 375 ...
a 444 is short stocked and high scope ... getting a tap from that is a common occurance

BiebsShoot a 3" Turkey load or Buckshot in an average pump or bolt shotgun....that's about it.

carpetman1This is a recoil formula. It is not pounds just a factor number for comparison. It is not linear--for example .22 centerfires will have a reading down around 12 but very little recoil and by 20 it's pretty much a kicker. Bullet weight(in grains) + powder charge(in grains)times muzzle velocity in fps divided by 3500(constant) divided by rifle weight(in pounds). Using some typical loadings for the two you mentioned and a 7 pound rifle--both of them are in the heavy kicker with the .444 around 27 and the .375 around 37--OUCH.

drewhenrytntAccording to that formula a 900gr bullet burning 155gr of H4350 with a muzzle velocity of 2150fps and a rifle weight of 10.75lbs would only have a score of 60??? I guarantee my 600 OK kicks way more than twice what my .375H&H does!

mrjulian_1970Not sure about that formula, but the one I use would put that load/gun combo at just over 209 ft-lbs.

Ouch
