M 77, Mark II in .300 Ultra Mag.
A friend has one and is willing to let me have it cheap.

Would converting it to .404 Jeffery simply be a matter of rebarrelling and bedding?

No bolt work? No Magazine work?

If it feeds the RUM's well then the only trifling issue would be making sure the .532" rim bolt face works for the non-rebated .542" rim of the .404 Jeffery.

Sounds pretty nifty. I would grab it.

I didn't know they made the M-77 action in H&H (3.6"-ish)length.

Looks like they did (in either Express or Mark II -- not clear):

That also says they made a 458 REM Mag. That's a rare caliber. Big Grin

True! A typo? Or as rare as the .395 Tatanka?

That table also lists the production of .416 Taylor, which I assume was 2 prototypes. Winchester and Ruger both made a couple of those, and never went anywhere with them.

The listed .375 H&H seems to indicate RSM.

The Mk II standard rifle lists 300 RSUM.

I was thinking this 300 RUM must be a gunsmith-opened-up M77MkII standard, like the .375 H&H that Dave Scovill had done, and Phil Shoemaker has inherited, and like the .458 Lott another forum member has posted pictures of here. A search might turn those up.

The 375 ulta mag is a custom job.It was not chambered in the standard Ruger markII nor will it fit the action. It will fit the Express 375 action. There were 12 416 taylors made in the Ruger 77.The 458 ruger model 77s in mark ones are fine rifles.I am going for a 416 ruger which will fit the standard ruger Action.

Ruger Stopped making all the Remington short mags and the wsm calibers. Its a sign of the future for these calibers.

Never Mind: It's a SAUM! He left the "Short Action" part off when he was telling me about it.

I thought it was funny that I had never heard of an M77 chambered in a full size Ultra Mag. But then again, I did't know they made the Remington SAUM. I thought all thier short mags were of the Winchester variey.

You can go back to sleep now.

.404 SAUM? .395 SAUM? Maybe not, the .395 WSM would be an easier conversion... rotflmo

About 6-8 months ago I saw New in the Box Ruger 7mm SAUM's going for $350. The guy selling them on GB had several. I almost bought one if I'd have figured out what I could have turned it into, nothing came to mind so I passed. The guy selling them said the SAUM's were never a good seller for Ruger and they dropped them and he got a bunch as a wholesaler cheap.

Buy it and chamber it for the .458 African Express, which fits in a standard Mauser action.
