I am wondering which mounts and rings are better. Leupolds QRW rings and mounts or the QR rings and mounts. I have a winchester M-70 375hh stainless synthetic with the qrw's and a 1.5-5X on it. I am purchasing a safari classic in 416 remington mag. I am going to be putting a 1.5-5x leupold on it also. I am going to use my 416 in Afica for buff and hippo and I want the mount and ring combination that is goin to be the most reliable and strongest. So which ones do you prefer and why?

I have had QRs on my .375 for seven years now, with no problems whatsoever. They return to zero after being re-intalled, they hold the scope under recoil, and are relatively inexpensive.

If you get the Weaver-style rings, make sure that the crossbolt is square, not the old round style. When mounting the rings, push the ring forward in the slot so it makes full contact with the base.

I have QRW on my pre-64 375 H&H I started oput with QR but the bases are smaller on the QRW and it looked better so that is why they are on now.
On ther pre-64 in cal 375 the action is made longer and the QRW base is smaller and boes there for not block the area that is re-worked.
I think that they both are stong mounts and you should pick the one you like the best on your rifle.

Cheers,

To me the QR bases seem too high. They block too much of the iron sights (most of mine are on Pre-64 M70). In reality, the chance of me actually using the iron sights as a back up are very slim. However, I still like to know that if I take off the scope I can easily see the iron sights. With the QRW bases it is not a problem.

I leave in less than two weeks for an African hunt. My light rifle is a Winchester Pre-64 M70 300H&H. I am using the QRW's and have two scopes (1.75-6x and 1.5-5x illum.) sighted in and ready to go.

Shumba,
I have to agree with your statement. I still have the regular QD on many of my rifles but on my .376 Steyr Prohunter the mount does block the iron sights. On my .35 Whelen 7600 they don't, I guess it just depends on the rifle.

I've had good experiences with the QR's but the bases are high and can block the rear sight, depending on how high the sight is. They are very strong and consistently return to zero. I've put QRW's on one rifle with lower profile sights and so far they work well.
