I just checked the free bore on my .458 and found that all the bullets I use including 500 hornadys travel an extra 1" at least till they hit rifling. I was going to get another rifle rechambered to 458 Lott and was wondering if gunsmiths use a separate throating reamer when rechambering to 458 Lott. I,m not after Benchrest accuracy in a dangerous game rifle but it would be good if I can get the freebore down to a reasonable level with 500 gn bullets so that when I use lighter 300gn bullets I can get decent accuracy. Do 458 Lott reamers come with a separate throating reamer?

1" is a lot of freebore. But if the freebore diameter matches that of the bullet you will have better accuracy than if the freebore is larger.

cr500, There is nothing wrong with a parallel throat. You aren't going to be shooting in any benchrest competitions with a .458. The idea behind the parallel throat is to allow time to get the projectile moving before it is swaged into the rifling. Smooth out the pressure. Some of the big tanks nowadays have the "feebore" as long as the entire barrel, they still hit their targets at several thousand yards.
