Well, I am thinking about a rifle in the .577 caliber and a .585 Nytai sounds like a possiblity. I am to poor to afford a T-REX.

Where do I start? receiver recommendations? gunsmith? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Tongo,

Virtually every aspect of building both of those rifles has been discussed here recently, meaning a search under this forum will be profitable.

Pay particular care to the threads initiated by a gent who goes by "PC" out of Ozzy-land, he just built one and is very pleased with it, getting much good information.

This guy can build them for you

Have fun.

Tongo,

the gentlemen here helped my friend and I build our .585 Nyati's.

Rob gunbuilder who posts here gave us a lot of good advice. If your on a budget like my mate and I then your best bet is to build it on either a cz 550 magnum action or the Brno 602 action. We both found Brno 602 actions at substatially lower prices than a new cz 550 so thats what we chose.

If you e-mail me privately I will forward all Robs techniqual stuff to you, my smith who is a knowledgable bloke said it was all spot on. I will just give you some general stuff here.

Do not make the mistake of going to light it will be un-shootable, mine weigh's about 13 pounds. It has a 25" barrel which is 1" at the muzzle, it is threaded to accept a muzzle break which is needed and makes hearing protection mandatory (my mate accidently let fly with his without muffs and it near popped his ear drums!!). I paid the premium to have the mag & follower altered to hold three down in a slighly staggered configuration, this is probably not needed and in hindsight I could have saved $$ here. The stock is of particular importance, choose the style that bests suits you for heavy recoiling rifles. For this I suggest shooting a couple of bigbores with different styled stocks and find what works for you. Personally with hardkickers weatherby styled stocks work for me, my stock builder reccomended that style and for ME there perfect. Mine is a custom composite fiberglass/kevlar weatherby with three mercury recoil reducers in the stock. Some say the Mercury recoil reducers are a gimmick but even if they add a little weight they work for me. If they were not there my gun would be muzzle heavy but with them it balances perfect. Just like a fine Englisg sise by side [Wink] .

I added a leupold 2.5x compact and used warne Fixed rings, I have fired 30 odd shots with no dramas or movement yet. I have Rem irons fitted in the event of scope failure, there ugly but if your on a budget they work and can be had for next to nothing.

Make sure you go to a competent smith who has worked on bigbores before and knows what he is doing as getting reliable feeding can be a tricky thing.

I am at the minute shooting 650 gr woodleigh's infront of 150 grains of AR2209 which is the equivelent of IMR 4350 and apparently about 5 grains slower. I am probably getting 2300-2400 fps from this.

I have never seen anything floor stuff like this rifle does it really is a hoot. If you really want it pay the $ for a proper job and have heaps of fun [Big Grin]

E-mail me privately and I can send pictures and that data of Rob's.

PC,
I liked to read the progression of your Nyati, all good info from the sources involved.

Have you tried touching off some full horsepower loads w/o the brake yet? I have yet to fire a MB .585" rifle since my T-Rex is without one. However, when you send a 650gr bullet at 2550fps and a 727gr bullet at 2440fps without a MB, it's a moving experience [Wink]

Tongo,
have you looked at having Pac-Nor do the barrel & work as they have a Nyati reamer & gunsmith there. They did a top notch job on my .50 BMD Short and at very reasonable costs. Also, someone was selling 585 Nyati stuff a few months ago. Do a search in the Classifides on this site.

Bakes,

my Gunsmith is Bob De'Vries of Kudu Services 34 Cantebury Rd Heathmont (Melbourne). My stock maker is Alan Naumann of Corporal trading in Nerang QLD. He does excellent composite stocks. The work from both these blokes is excellent.

BMG I have not touched off any full power loads yet, and I have not removed the sissy slots [Wink] I am easing my way into the .585 Nyati.

Another thing is I was waiting for my Horneber brass to develop full power loads with as the Bertram cases are as we know very soft. But alas to say it looks as though my .Hornebr .585 brass has been lost in the mail. Robgunbuilder posted it on the 16/9/02 and I still have not got it yet. I am pretty pissed as it I have done $450AUS & my mate has done about $250AUS on his share (he has built a .585 as well)

BMG what action did you do your T-Rex on ?? This cartridge really interested me but because Bertram Brass is only 2 hours from were I live I thought I would go with the safe option for me in the .585 Nyati (and actions are more available with the 602's & 550's. Is your T-rex wear irons or a scope ?? What bullets do you use ??

PC,
That sucks on the Horneber cases getting 'eaten' in the mail. Is there any way to track them? I hope they get to you because both the 585 Nyati & 577 T-Rex cases from him are great.

I purchased my T-Rex 'online' from a guy. He had it for 5 years and never shot it. It was made by A-Square and is a carbon copy of Saeeds in every way except mine also has a Leupold M8 2x scope with QD mounts along with the iron sights. Three in the mag and one in the tube. I use whatever I can get my hands on which includes Woodleigh, Cast bullets (1200gr & 550gr), and 727gr custom 'wad cutters' from http://www.ferret50.com/products.html which I've posted pic's of on this site somewhere.

I 'happened' into the T-Rex unintentionally and couldn't be happier.

PC,

Don't feel left out...I sent $100.00 bank draft to a fellow in Swden for a pair of excellent condition Husqvarna m146 stocks; they were sent on October 7th. Where they are is now a matter of wonder and speculation. We are having the Post Offices from both ends looking for it. [Frown]

BMG,

If you want a real splat load for your .577 try the woodleigh 650 gr Black powder projectiles, there perfect for soft skinnned stuff. They have a reduced impact velocity therefore when driven at .585 Nyati & .577 T-rex speeds they kind of behave like a giant ballistic tip [Big Grin]

I use them here on ferals because the toughly construced 650's & 750's would not expand at all. Alas I still have not recovered a 650 gr woodleigh BP either.

BMG I would also like to say that the leupold compact 2.5x scopes are fantastic !! My .585 wears one as does my 45/70. There an excellent cross between irons and a scope I reckon. And I have found I shoot much better on low magnification than high.

Rodger there is still a chance my brass will show as the Harbour strike in San Francisco may have slowed proceedings. Rob is away at the minuet but when he gets back if it has not showed I am going to try and get it tracked some how. Problem is it was sent economy which I think means sea mail, bloody ship may have sunk [Confused]

I hope the parcel was insured.

For some reason, reloading components seem to be moving slowly since 9/11. There is a possibility that they are being detained and reviewed at customs. Otherwise I cannot understand why my GS Custom bullets take about a MONTH via AIR MAIL, after the date that they were actually shipped. Hopefully it is just some snafu like that which is delaying PC's brass.

500,

there was no insurance I don't think. So if it's lost I might as well have put the money on a horse.

Actually 500 I am sort of hoping the big strike at the docks in your country is the reason there still not here. I would really love to get that brass for my 750 grain bullet loadings.

A mate of mine has that dummy round you sent me 500 when I get it back off him I will post it back mate.

I was just told that it's not unusual for packages sent regular mail to OZ to take 2 to 3 months to arrive. The effect of the west coast dock strike may also have an effect. Ed at AHR said that sending brass was not a problem although I too wonder if such packages are not being delayed unduely. PC yes call me at work when you get a chance. I'm still hoping everything arrives one of these days. It seems really surprising that if there was a problem with the package , that at the very worst it would not get returned to me. -Rob

My business IS transportation of goods (mostly truckloads) and from the trade rags there was a lot of info about the strike. Some shipments will be backed up 3 months. For an example, Target stores merchendise from overseas intended for the holiday season might not get there until after the new year!
It SHOULD get there, but it's anybody's guess as to when.

PC and Rob,

When the 300 Ultra first came out, a mate of mine had one made. The reamer from JGS came out OK but as the gunsmith (PC it was Tobler)ordered that I don't know the details.

There was no brass available so a chap in America, the fellow that was DJK or similar...Chuck Richardson I think...bought some 300 Ultra ammo and pulled them apart. He did two different batches as ammo was not widespread. It took so long for the cases to arrive that my mate thought Chuck had dudded him. but finally they arrived. Of course this was all well before September 11.

In my experience, brass comes quick from Huntingtons.

I sort of think if it has not showed by Christmas or early in the new it's not coming.

I also believe that beacuse it's to do with firearms they just hold it up intentionally because us shooters are such a despicable group of people [Wink]

I do however think it will work out.

Rob is a hard man to catch on the phone thats for sure [Big Grin]

If that parcel was sea mail, do not be surprised if it takes up to 4 months, as that is what I have experienced with pacific shipments.

I've had overseas shipments that took six months, regular post, no explanation given. Maybe it's just paranoia, but this almost always happens with gun stuff, and not other things. - Dan
