I'm building a 404 jeffery and starting to look into which express sight, I think I want a two leaf. I've seen some express sights that the sight is wider than the base or quater rib, some that are the same. I think it looks better the same width but in the big picture I guess it doesnt matter. Comments please

It depends, if you can get them center I prefer they be flush on both sides also....I think I prefer the one standing and sight it in at 100 center, that way its about 1/2 inch high at 50 and I can see that Buffs eye over the top of the bead.... I have some leaf sights with up to 4 down and have never used any but the one standing in all my years of shooting irons at big game...and a couple are actually zeroed in at 50, 100, 200 and 300...for what it's worth... A one standing sight is about as fool proof as sights can get, that is one sight that will never let you down..I carry an extra front bead for the gun I am hunting with in my ammo belt...

What about putting the extra front bead in a trap door grip cap? I know they are overly expensive, but it would look good. You'd have to wrap it in a cloth I guess to keep it from rattling around. I personally like the idea of the less than classic adjustable express sights, no filing necessary. Red

Get a copy of "The Big Bore Rifle" by Michael Mcintosh. Look at the color photograph just after page 144 of the Jeffery 600 Nitro. I have that same rear sight on my 450 No2. I like it better than any other express sight I have seen. You probably do not need any extra folding leaves, but they do look nice. They seem to say AFRICA. I actually flipped up my 200 yard leaf on my 450/400 3 1/4" when I shot my 2nd Caribou in Alaska.

I am not Ray but I too like the NECG sights. I have ordered the masterpiece and s-4 fixed silver with 3/32 bead and fold down ivory bead for low light shooting. I had originally planned for a peep like the Brockman for my 550 express but am using the two blade express instead. I do have Ashley peeps and bolt striker peeps on a couple of other rifles which can be handy for times when the scope fails or sight are off. Hasn't ever happened but like all good boy scouts I would rather be prepared. Frank

I am having a rifle put together as a gift to my stepfather and am going to use the NECG Masterpiece banded front with the express rear, either 2 folding or 3. that is unless my gunsmith has another brand he prefers. I will just buy the front site and let him (my stepfather) pick the hood and site that he wants. If I were picking I would go with the fiber optic rear and matching front that they make, just to try it out. I have a pre-64 win. 458 rear sight going on my Lott. I haven't used the different open sights enough yet to know what I prefer. Red

Gringo: I haven't put cross-hairs on a game animal of any sort for over 20 years, preferring a gold bead fore-sight, and the guns that normally wear them. If I were building one tomorrow, I too would go for the 2-leaf option (fixed standing, one folding) with the shallow V express-style. Occasionally you will be offered a shot out around 150 to 200 yds, usually with enough time to fiddle with sight-leaves, and the longer zero is very helpful. Make sure that the second leaf is held tightly down though when not in use. Contemplating a shot further than 200 yds with open sights is not a responsible option today, so additional leaves are worthless. NE 450 No2: Re: "Get a copy of "The Big Bore Rifle" by Michael Mcintosh" This is a joke, right? Next time I'm searching through a pile of hen's teeth and rocking-horse shit, I'll keep my eye out for one!

Casador, I like the NE stuff and thats mostly what I have used..It is inexpensive and classic in design..I also like several of their designs, especially the new adjustable front sights, they take a lot of math out of the equasion of sighting in etc, not to mention reduction of filing. You also have an option of a lot of good beads, red or ivory for instance....I like the barrel band sights also.... I like a 3/32 Ivory bead..I do not like the flip up night sights as the flip up ivory is too large and the bead is too small.... If I have a shallow V with flat top ears standing rear, then a New England post (partridge) of .10 high gold faced that can be filed down to zero and flush with the top of the flat top of the V, then that is my favorite fast sight, such as one would normally see with a pistol sight picture, it is as good as a Ghost ring peep for accuracy and aquisition of target.......

if i have my choice, it's 1 standing, 1 folding, and a warthog ivory front sight... i'll be using an necg front and a cz rear on my 550 express. so that pretty much aligns where I am going jeffe

Marrakai I referenced that book because it is the only one I know that shows a half decent picture of the style of rear sight that is on my 450 No2. I made no comments on the book, good or bad. Of all the rear sights I have ever used I like this style of sight best. It seems to have just the right shape, angle and V width. The blade is also very thick and strong. I do not have the technology to do so but maybe someone can post that picture here. It would be well worth the price of that book just to have a copy of that rear sight made for his rifle. J.J. Perodeau could probably duplicate that rear sight. A couple of years ago that exact rifle, or one just like it was at his shop www.champlinarms.com That was one sweet handling double. I did not shoot it. Wish I had, It fit me perfectly, and had my favorite rear sight.

NE 450 No2: I fear you mis-understood me. I do not know whether the book is good or bad, because its so bloody RARE these days that I can't get hold of a copy! (at least, not for under a hundred bucks!) Thats all, mate.
