Cleaning out some of the accumulation in the reloading shelves. Found these treasures today: 700 grain Hawk bullets, moly coated, soft nose, 0.035" jacket. 0.510" dia. Too much bullet for my 50-110.

Yep, WTF, What The Funny-business! You would have to shoot it pretty slow in a fast twist barrel to get best hunting use out of it. Go too fast and it turns inside-out, separates jacket and core. Still, that might produce spectacularly lethal bullet failures on cow moose with a broadside shot. Go too slow with a twist too slow and it might be minute-of-barn-door accurate. A rifleman has got to know his bullet limitations. Rip ...

Hawk makes good bullet for the old slow Winchesters, that's it soft copper and lead is nothing more than a cup and core, nothing new about it, its as ancient as the bow and arrow..I shot about 30 head of game with them early on with the thickest jackets made, they all separated..I called Hawk and suggested the solder the core, he disagreed so be it..I did try his 38/40 bullets in my old Winchester and they perform to perfection as to performance, the 38-40 isn't the best killer in the world, and may well be the worst killer with any bullet. My granddad, a Texas ranger way back when told me it worked well on men, and would kill a deer at rock throwing range if you could hit it in the head. I spent a good part of my young life proving him to be true. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

About what I have heard over the years about Hawk bullets. If I were still living in the Georgia swamps I might try the 700's on feral hogs. The open base and no bonding is a little worrisome. Meanwhile the box of 50 makes a great paperweight on my desk!

The 600 OK uses a 900gr bullet, and the cast practice bullet for my 700 AHR weighed 1,250gr. There's some big stuff out there if you go looking :-)

If you want something for relatively sane velocities (2000 fps) the .510 caliber 600g Woodleigh soft point is hard to beat. I'm shooting the 570g Swift A-Frames at 2400 fps out of my 500 Jeffery. Moved on from the 570g TSX's at 2300 fps (which is a fine bullet and load). The 700-grain Blacktip AP milsurp bullets pulled from 50 BMG used to be available for about 35 cents each. Nice, cheap plinkers in a fast-twist 500 A2 at about 2100 fps. Accurate too. About the most accurate milsurp bullet you will find for a .510. Shoot them backwards if you want a softpoint for barking squirrels. Rip ...
