Anyone's experience with synthetic stocks on 375 and up would be appreciated, particularly:

How well do they withstand recoil?
In general anything special needed with regard to bedding?
Do you think they "absorb" felt recoil to any meaningful extent?

Assume we are talking about "best available" stock.

Thanks for your help.

I have had two synthetic stocks on my 375 H&H. One was a hogue overmolded with full bedding block. It was pretty comfortable and very durable but was HEAVY and the rubber caught on everything. The current stock I have o my 375 is an ultralight kevlar stock, I had a complete ligthweight job done to my winchester model 70 and this stock was the lightest I could find for it. It has held up very well to some hard use. I don't think they add any recoil reduction except maybe the hogue, all that rubber probably helps but the wieght does too.

Here is my winchester 70. 6lbs 4oz with the stock detached, just over 7lbs with scope.

Better than walnut.

Just like walnut only easier to work with.

No.

McMillan on a 500 A-Square: No problems.

Thanks for your help.

Less worries with synthetics than walnut. Do it!

Thebear_78,
That is a beauty that reminds me of my 6.75# bare weight Pre-64 M70 .375 H&H. They will have to pry that one from my cold dead fingers. Yours too? thumb

Here is the other end of the spectrum in synthetics: 500A2/.510JAB BRNO ZKK 602 in a McMillan at 10.5# bare weight.

The barrel channel was scraped and sanded out to accept the larger contour barrel than the standard stock would allow.

The secondary recoil lug on the barrel is bedded with a hidden allthread crossbolt bedded there to back it.

Hidden allthread crossbolts were placed behind the primary action recoil lug and in the web between trigger and magazine wells. No chances taken with 500A2/.510JAB recoil.

Stainless steel pillars were installed whether needed or not.

That is all I did to this one.

If it had been walnut or laminate I would have done all the same except to also bury an allthread rod through the long axis of the pistol grip.
The McMillan is so strong it does not need that.
