I am a huge fan of the 45 70. The Guide gun is my GO TO gun for big game when hunting in an area where the shots ate likley to be at 100 yards or less.
I have killed black bears, many deer and moose with it. I would not hessitate to use it against ANY animal in North America.
That being said I am also logical and not a blind fan of the gun and cartrige combonation.
I would hunt buff, lion and certainly leopard with it. I would NEVER go after an ele with it.
And as much as I love the gun I can't think of why I wouldn't rather use either my 375 H&H or 458 win on anything that is big and hunts back in Africa.
This is good thinking, Only problem is that the 45/70 isn't legal in the great majority of places where free range, wild cape buff are hunted.
But if someone handed me a 45/70 and no proper DG rifle was availble I'd be happy to go hunt a buff - not so with Elephant!!!

Not MY choice for a DG cartirdge (have killed an American Bison with one) but my guess this debate/circle jerk will go on forever

Done lot's of load development for the .45-70, mainly because I shoot too much, and am too cheap to spend money for store bought bullets, so have been casting my own for 40 years; AND anything with a .45 prefix in it is OK with me. Am really a fan of the .458 Lott. Don't care for many of the bottle neck cases simply because it narrows the weight range of proper bullet length for the case. More flexability with a straight, or I should say, straighter, case. My old bullet business, ( Black Lion Bullets) sold mostly .458 dia. hard cast bullets for a variaty of velocities. Now. . . where were we. . . ?
