Book Review: PRACTICAL DOPE ON THE BIG BORES Interesting book, by Fred C. Ness, 1948, in which he said, quoting a correspondent: "Back in 1929, a friend of mine, who used to work for Newton Arms Co., made up a gun using the .505 case necked to .40 caliber. He gave me all the data on the gun, and it is amazing ..." "He tried to interest the Government in this design as it would penetrate more steel than the .50-caliber Browning. The .416 has a twist of one turn in a foot ... " O.K., maybe it was a .416/.505 Gibbs, which is what the .408 Chey Tac should have been. This correspondent to F. C. Ness had P.O. Ackley neck the .505 Gibbs to ".40 caliber" for him, sometime before 1948. There was no mention of the 12GaFH in the Ness book. A good read. There are a couple of pictures of nicely ugly rifles in that book. Fred was a swell guy who appreciated ugly rifles too. He did some mighty ugly sporterizing with his own hands. | ||
