| easy as a barrel change to 458WM, the 416 Rem is a necked-up and blown out 375H&H...tougher and more $$$. How about a 375 Ruger?

| My vote would be the 458win mag, it is easy to rebarrel and rechamber to 458 from 300 winmag the bolt faces are the same and you should not have to mess with the mag box. the 416 is a little longer and may require som mag box work, depending on your rifle.

| Have you considered the 416 Taylor which is the same case as the 458 necked down. The ballistics are still well within the range needed for dangerous game. |

| I though about converting a 7 mm rem mag to 416 rem mag but too much trouble.I am going to convert an old Ruger 77 good old tang safety to 416 ruger.I think thats the cheapest way to go.You can also find cheap 7 mm rem mags in stainless rugers also. |

| Do not forget the 416 AR as an option for building a big bore on a Ruger77 7Rem Mag. Keith

| Absolutely no sweat to open up a Mod. 70 for .416 Rem. Take out the spacer, adjust bolt stop. I've had 2 done in long mags that started as an 06 and a 280. Both feed perfectly. Obviously if starting with a standard case head the bolt face and extractor need a touch up. |

| It can be done by a good gunsmith, but it's better to start off with an action that was built from the factory for a magnum length cartridge. There are a number of rifles originally chambered for the 300 weatherby, 7mm stw, 375 H&H, 416 remington, etc. that will work better than the one you have. |

| My Remington model 700s in 416 rem mag will hardly eject a loaded 416 rem mag round. If you have one of these replace the mag spring with a Weattherby Spring the original facorty spring always fails. It did on all three of my rifles.I think a stainless 416 Ruger with the grey ruger finish dull with open sites and a 22" barrel and a HS presion stock not a hogue with be awesome with open sites.I do like Rugers open sites and there rings are the best bar none. |
