After firing a ruger no#1 in a 460 necked up to 50 cal. I loved it after a little chat with friends I ended up going to the smithy and said build me one please funny thing is I got a dumb ass look back from him. Anyways he has now put most of it together, paul (the smithy) is starting to get on my nerves a bit the gun is now braked with mercury tubs installed now he said I should get the safty receased otherwise it will rip me into two . Any ruger no#1 owners been cut by thier safety button ? I also have a 45-70 with full loads never had a prob wise move to get it done?

He is right. I have a Ruger #1 in .458 and in all the times I shot at the bench it didn't happen. But, in the field it has happened twice. It can leave a nasty cut also.

Trim it down to a small button with fine chequering. I did this on my 500 and stopped tearing my thumb to pieces.

I saw a .50 caliber ruger #1 based on 338 Laupa. It was a gun made with a huge silenser. It was loaded subsonic so it was a true silent gun. It was made for roe hunting near cities.

I was suposed to just make a "tump" sound. I never fired it so I don't know if it worked but it looked cool.

The neck on the cartrige was made by just turning down the thick case of the 338Laupa. Inside the case was straight!

What is the .50 calibre you are getting built?

A .460 necked up as well or ?

I have fired some 55-ft/lb recoiling .45/70 loads in my No. 1, and have never been hurt by the safety. But the recessed safety is sure nice to have, looks neat, etc., and is probably not a necessity. But I assume your round will really kick compared to a .45/70 at any loading level!!

I think the factory Ruger safety is fine on the N0.1 for my shooting of .416 Rigby, .458 Lott, and .510 JAB/500 A-Square. It has never bit me.

I would only change it to a lower profile if it was necessary to clear the big rimmed Nitro Express cases on ejection, for the custom jobs.

Thanks guys I pop into the smith on Sunday and paid ANOTHER deposit this project is a long journey it's nearly done it's a 500 A-Square with an extra long throat (because I said I would like to shoot A-MAX projectiles).When I got there Paul did it the recessed safety anyway as a free bee as this is the 3rd custom he built for me and it's an interesting project for him as well. I really appreciate that any way the backup sights are on the scope mounts are done and I should be able to test and reload for this cannon in two weeks as I am taking time off work . First Target is the scrub bulls that wreak havoc on our nabours farm.

anybody got a picture of a recessed safety? I have a number 3 in 45/70, and even with my hot loads have not had trouble with my safety or with ejecting the rimmed case. It is and older rifle, I think bicentenial edition or something like that, maybe made 1976?

I've always wanted to build a little #1 RSI in 500 Linebaugh.

Everyone says... "ooh sounds cool... but go with 50 Alaskan". Uh no. It'd kick enough just fine as a Linebaugh.
