Which gun would you consider better quality? I am looking at getting another 470 double and have need to know what some of your opinions are on these two make of guns. I already have a Hyem, but want an extra one and looking at either a Merkel or Krieghoff.

Maybe someone on this forum has a nice 470 for sale?

Adam,

The Merkel action is very strong, the barrels are heavy and normally well regulated. The stocks are plain but with good dimensions for use with express sights. The price is about the lowest of all well made large caliber double rifles. I would think it is ideal for a PH in that you can both rely upon it and not be too troubled by giving it the beating that is unavoidable when you use it EVERY day.

While the Krieghoff is no doubt a strong and reliable rifle I for one dislike the cocking piece safety. Too unlike my other double guns, shotgun and rifle. As you mentioned that this will be an extra double this alone would rule out the Krieghoff I would think. The stocks seem to be quite straight as well, they could do with more drop for use with express sights.

Another good choice in the price range of the Merkel and Krieghoff might be Searcy, but Im sure others will elaborate on that

Best regards;
Brett
