Who at this time besides winchester makes a factory 416 remington? Is the winchester a custom shop gun or is it factory direct and how much does it cost??

You can get the Winchester Safari Express for about $8-900. They just don't make a lot of them so you may have to look around a bit or have a dealer order one in for you.

This is the one I'd be looking for...

One can search the other manufacturers such as Sako, Browning, Savage, CZ, Weatherby, and others, but the only one that I'd care about is Winchester or I'd build one on a 1999 action or Mauser magnum.

In the end anything I build will cost more than the Winchester and after I bought the winchester I'd still invest about 50 hours of work to bring it to my standards.

look closely at the CZ rifles. http://www.czusa.com

The only CZ that I looked at in the shop had a very clubby looking and feeling stock. It was a 375 but felt very awkward as compared to my pre 64 model 70.

I'm pondering the same thing. Winchester is the only sane game in town as far as I can see.

I've considered buying the Ruger or CZ in 375H&H, then rebarreling (and restocking the CZ)vs buying the Winchester and working on that. I still haven't figured out the best way to do it. I know I like the fact that the CZ holds 5 in the magazine.

This seems to be the case. Too bad because it's a fine cartridge.

The CZ seems to chamber only for the .416 Rigby....imagine that!!!

Building one is not difficult however. The Remington 721 in .300 H&H can be converted as can many M700 magnums. Also the Whitworth Mauser will do fine and if you really want there's the current Zastava offerings out there.

The P-17 enfield will do nicely for this cartridge as well.

Any gun chambered for 7MM STW, .300 or .375 H&H, .300 Weatherby, .340 Weatherby, 8MM Rem Mag, and a few others can easily be converted to .416 Rem Mag. If you want a CRF badly most magnum M-70s can be opened up to hold the .416 RM

The Win. or montana 99 would be my choice short of a std. Mauser for the .416 Rem...Like any factory rifle they need some work as you indicate...

Mine have all been on the 98 or FN Mauser actions...and mostly always will be.

I am building a Winchester up in this cartridge right now, mainly because of the bad influence of Ray and others on my formerly spotless character.

I have had a Sako AV Hunter in 416 Rem Mag since 1991. It has several hundred rounds through it. It has never hiccupped once. It is very accurate, well balanced and reliable.

Depending on your tastes, the Sako, Sauer and Blaser are ready to go hunting with out of the box. Either the Winchester or Remington rifles in theis caliber should pass through the hands of a very competent gunsmith before you head to the game fields.

Damn Alf and his pictures. Some day I will have to get a real job to buy some of those guns!

If you were to buy one of the new winchesters are they all the same or can you buy a used one say a few years old?? Are there any years to avoid like say a 1964 model 70.

They improved the stock a few years ago. I really like the new stock. They are all a crap shoot. Plan on spending the price of the rifle on getting it squared away and you will be happy if it costs less. I picked up a couple of the newer Safari rifles in 375 H&H and 416 Rem Mag at my local gun pushers shop earlier this summer. They felt real good in the hand, came up smoothly and were poointed where I was looking. I would just buy a recent one (for the stock) and see how it works. Jim Kobe and Dennis Olson would both do an excellent job of correcting any short falls. There are quite a few other talented gun smiths. Other posters will have their own recommendations.

At a minimum I would have the rifle bedded by someone who has worked with hard kickers in the past.

If the safety is gritty and nasty, Mark Penrod is a master at cleaning those up.

The new style iron sights on the latest Safari models are also quite an improvement on earlier years.

Is it a problem if you open up the bolt face or should you only consider a 300 or 375 pre 64. Also are the magazine boxes the same size in a say 30-06 and a 300 H&H.

No, you can open the bolt face on a M-70 or mauser..On the 06 length action you will need to do a bit more converting but its about a push either way, as the mag actions cost more...Be sure and have the rear ring right side modified and the half circle cut in the front ring ala the mag action....

Look here:

http://cdnn.powerfulhosting.com/objects/2520.itml/icOid/2520

This is a factory chambered 416 rem. Call CDNN though the price listed is not the going price its cheaper, if you have a Shotgun News they run an advert every other week with the pricing, seems $800 ish is what I remember on these.

Blaser makes a great 416 Rem Mag in the R 93 Safari. While all of my over 40 cal rifles are doubles I have shot a 416 Blaser and liked it a lot.

gunny,

I bought a custom shop, special build, SS Model 70 in .416 Rem. from a fellow poster here on AR.

It feeds and functions like a dream, has a XXX walnut stock and shoots three Remington factory loaded 350 or 400 grain Swift A-Frames into very small groups at 100 yards.

It cost about twice what the standard safari classics are going for these days, but was worth it, IMHO.

I own a Sauer 202 Takedown like the one you posted. I have 2 barrels, a 375H&H and a 416 REM barrel. Both barrels shoot under 1" moa at 100 yards. I have a few rifles and this one is by far the best made. It fits together like a fine watch, Sauer paid a lot of attention to detail.
It has one shortcoming, it is so finely made that you can't help but be overly protective of it. I also have a 416 REM model 70 from the custom shop and there is no comparison, but the Sauer is more than twice the price of the model 70. I believe at best, you get what you pay for in Life. CHEERS

Does the Sauer 202 come with a wood stock?? Also when you say double the price does that mean its a 2,000 dollar rifle? The thought of being able to use a takedown and only carrying a small case through the airlines is very apealing to me.

Gunny, The Sauer shown in Tiggertate's post is the 202 takdown Elegance, it is a very high quality rifle, very very well made. One of the plus's is you can have multiple barrels of various calibers. And yes it has a very high quality wood stock. The price is $5000.00 Plus.
You can buy other Sauer takedowns for less. I suggest that you go to their website and have a look. CHEERS
